DescriptionFLAME ON! Very few artist/storytellers ever achieve the level of success of John Byrne. His work on The Fantastic Four and The Uncanny X-Men included some of the most memorable stories ever published in comics. Here's a great example of his work, the cover to Fantastic Four #289. Beautifully composed with the FF laying unconscious in the ruins of a destroyed building and only one hero left standing (Actually flying in this case). Despite all the detail in the cover, your eye goes right to the startled Johnny Storm, staring wide-eyed, saying, "It can't be...Not you!" Now how do you not buy that issue just to find out who he's talking to? A classic cover masterfully scripted, penciled and inked by the Canadian superstar.Social/Sharing |

Absolutely gorgeous cover, from the tail end of the Byrne run, which I always thought finished extremely strong!

As thrilled as I usually am to see your name on my Watched Galleris alert, I can't help but get this little twinge right before I click on it. Like, how much is this going to hurt. After seeing this, all I can say is, OUCH!!!!!

Yep, that's a great score! I think seeing She-Hulk layed out in the corner is the best part!

What a gem! And yes, definitely a Torch feature, although I must say my eye keeps getting drawn to that beautiful image of She-Hulk, lol.

This might be blasphemous to the veterans of collecting, but I've recently started appreciating John's work, mainly because i'm seeing it in all it's B&W glory from great collectors such as yourself. Those early coloring jobs really did take away from the glorious linework. Thank you for sharing!

There is one iron clad rule of comic art collecting - you only regret the stuff you DON'T buy! I regret not going after this one - great cover from one of the best runs in comics! And I love that the She-Hulk is on it! Congrats!

Poor Johnny, he had to go and fall for the old "toss the cosmic control rod into the Atomic Disintegrator" trick.

This could be any collection's jewel of the crown (if there were not so many jewels already).

I love Byrne's inking on these books. Count me as one of those fans who liked Byrne's FF more than his X-men. Just beautiful.

Is it just me or do other people think John Byrne has a remarkably ugly signature? I would be scrubbing away merrily with an ink eraser on the UPC box..
