DescriptionI don't usually post recreations. But this one blew me away. This is John Byrne's recreation of his 1980 cover for Uncanny X-Men #137, the heartbreaking climax to the Dark Phoenix Saga. It captures the moment Scott Summers and Jean Grey make their final stand against the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. IMHO, it's one of the greatest Marvel covers ever. I suspect Byrne felt that way too, considering how carefully he redrew this cover. Look at how painstakingly he crafted this recreation--Almost line-for-line, with only minor changes. I love that Byrne actually redrew every detail by hand, even the masthead, the title "PHOENIX MUST DIE!", as well as the corner headshots of the team members! And since he didn't have to include the huge banner ad that ran across the top of the published cover, he had the space to move the logo masthead up where it belonged, leaving more room for the art to breathe. Now as I understand it, Byrne only did one recreation of any cover he'd drawn so that makes this one even more special. It really is everything a John Byrne fan could ask for. So while I'll probably never own the original cover art to Uncanny X-Men #137, I can at least enjoy this impeccable recreation by the master himself.Signed and dated 2007 by John Byrne. A couple of million dollars? Most people have access to that sort of cash...in play money. As you said, this is by John, its great, and bonus of bonuses, you do not need to sell all of your other artwork and your house to buy it!

That's a mindblowing Byrne X-Men cover recreation and as others also pointed out, the original for this would be seven figures these days so yeah - an amazing recreation pickup. Congrats Bill!

With the seven figure price tag that the original would cost if it became available, this is a great alternative to own. As you said, I, too, seem to recall that Byrne said he would only do one recreation of any of his covers, which in the land of cover recreations is certainly appreciated and makes owning a recreation more special than it otherwise would be. He did a spectacular job on it, and as you mention, it's great that he went the extra mile to hand draw and ink the logo and corner box heads. While the ultimate finish of the line work does look slightly different from the original, it's to be expected because the original was inked by Austin and Byrne was not interested in doing a line for line recreation in which he had to emulate Austin's ink line. He made it very clear at the time that he would recreate HIS portion of the work and if he inked it, he would ink it in HIS style, not Austin's. But given that it's a recreation rather than the original anyway, I personally very much enjoy that it offers some slight differences. Congrats, Bill!

It is really cool to be able to have a recreation done by the orginal artist...even if the artist isn't very well known, like in this case ;) It's also great that he only did 1 per cover.

When I first saw the thumbnail I thought it was the original published cover and almost had a major heart attack! Then I saw the recreation was done by Byrne himself, so just suffered a minor stroke! Awesome, Bill!

It may be a recreation, but it captures all of the dynamism and excitement of the original cover. Byrne's skills were not diminished by the decades. Congratulations on this beautiful piece!

Very impressive. It's probably the most faithful recreation that I've seen from Byrne
Did you know that he would only do 1 recreation per cover? So rest assured knowing that you have the closest thing to the real deal!

while I'm not exactly a huge fan of recreations, in particular if the approach is to be as close as possible to the original piece, I admit that some pieces are so powerful (and at the same time out of reach) that this solution makes perfectly sense... like in this case, it sure is emotional

As soon as I read "I don't usually post recreations..." I heard it in the voice of The Most Interesting Man In The World! And this is a recreation worthy of that collection (and voice over). Congrats Bill!

Surprisingly, I haven't seen many of Byrne's X-Men recreations show up on CAF lately, but this is one of his biggest ones. Love the hand-drawn logos/head shots, and he managed to fit in his own touches to make this feel like more of an epic piece. I actually picked up one of his few interior page recreations, and while I'd love a Byrne/Austin original, it's also a far more affordable way of owning a Byrne X-Men Phoenix Saga page. Congrats on the pickup!
