DescriptionX-Men 133 is the definitive breakout issue that effectively raised Wolverine to Superstar status. The opening 4 page sequence is the Legendary Sequence that will forever be thought of as ‘THE Wolverine Sequence’ A while back I was fortunate enough to make a move to acquire this page that to me is THE page that started it all..The first attack that defined just how vicious and cunning Wolverine is.. …and like the moment on this page where Wolverine was exposed after being up in the rafters. Then making a dramatic signature attack move….I also am making the moment of exposing this slicing page from my collection after it’s been within my own portfolio rafters… This page is a prime example of how utterly epic and impactful the Claremont Byrne Austin team was…A trio of creative perfection that really lifted Wolverine and the X-men to heights greater than a fastball special..A thanks to them and these moments now etched in X-men and marvel lore. And As far as a Byrne Wolverine Grail page.. this to me is it...and sometimes such things are kept hidden and sometimes…SNIKT here it is…. Social/Sharing |

An imaginary scale for imaginary metal? How appropriate.

Unleashed this thing on a random Tuesday afternoon huh. I like your style! Panels 3 & 4 could easily be variant covers on their own. Thanks for sharing this beauty.

Unleashing yes...Random no..Tuesday comes from TIW the Norse god of War..and ultimately a God of War kind of Moment for Wolverine and so showcasing what he does best on the day that fits best what he is...A warrior born and made... Thx for the sharp appreciation of the page as I agree about panel 3 and 4 such Killer shots

I assume later attached to an overlay..the art itself as you see doesnt have words.

I do have pages from this era where the text was on a vellum overlay. However in that case usually there would be registration marks (a circle with a cross through it) taped to both the art page and the vellum page, so they could be lined up properly for reproduction. You can see an example here in the additional images, with Chris Claremont holding up the art and text pages separately, with the registration mark at the bottom of each.
I asked Tom Orzechowski how the text was added to the pages of X-Men 133 during production. He replied: "Most likely, the lettering, on vellum, was pasted onto photostats. As more and more books began to push the schedules, the practice moved to glueing directly onto the art. This allowed them to skip the step (and expense!) of making stats. How nice, meanwhile, that the art exists with all of Terry's background inks on display!"
And really, the art tells the story well enough that the text is superfluous. It is fun to see the marginal comments though.

Very interesting background info. Indeed it is preferred that none of the imagery is inf act covered directly by a balloon, for while the words on the page are excellent. Getting to see the pure image especially on a page that the story is in the image 100%..and I agree getting to see the comments on the margin are a special treat we get with the OA..

I will truly never understand why this page, one of the best to ever hit the open secondary market, has had so many different owners since it first appeared. It's mind boggling. I hope that it stays with you for many years to come, Phoenix!

Ruben..For sure this one will remain with me for some time..It's one of those really special kinds of pages so iconic to Wolverine really would have to be as I said vault of Adamantium otherwise one I intend to keep for a long time. I simply prefer to own it..as it is the best Byrne wolvie page I've seen come avail..and well as far as the diff owners, sometimes we simply do not know the circumstances behind the scenes why sales happen..In my case..This piece is with the Phoenix..

The main reason I never got that much into older artwork is that I am not a fan of yellowing glue stains and artwork being covered up by captions and word balloons, so this would for me be a perfect example of Byrne X-Men, even if it was not the perfect page that it is. Look after this treasure.

Wow, Logans real first name is revealed!! I expect he was dirty after falling into the sewer in the previous issue! Does he alternate between claws and a .44 magnum? Makes sense. I can remember his monologue about his gun being maybe empty of bullets. The gun has 6 bullets and he has 6 claws!! The claws are the backup! Claws being no use at distance. Its amazing how he could juggle two careers at the same time, as a police inspector and angry small canadian.

It's not my guess, Claremont used this reference to describe the sequence in the first draft of the Dark Phoenix Saga plots.

Wow, seeing this page reminded me of reading the legendary Byrne/Austin X-Men run in real time, and then getting to this, I mean Wolverine wasn't whiffing thru Magneto's cape, this was Conan-level carnage, and everything a growing boy needs! Huge congrats!!

You're absolutely spot on with your description of this page. It defined the character of Wolverine. I distinctly remember reading this issue when it came out. I was a military brat living in Germany in the 80s and my brother bought the comic at the Star & Stripes bookstore in Frankfurt. It's still as impactful now as it was then. Congrats!
