DescriptionDancer Jadin Wong performing her "Dance of the Moon Goddess" routine by James Bingham.Jadin was a Chinese American singer, dancer, actress, and comedian. She performed at Charlie Low's Forbidden City nightclub in San Francisco in the 1930's-40's and was known for her "Dance of the Moon Goddess" performance which is what James Bingham has captured in this painting (while adding in a bit of nudity). I am not sure where this illustration was used but it could have been for a Forbidden City nightclub program, a men's magazine pin-up, or even a matchbook cover for the club. Maybe Bingham just used her famous photograph (see extra images) for a magazine pin-up job? I'm still trying to figure this one out. Social/Sharing |

Oh God, is this gorgeous. You, sir, are one incredibly lucky collector. Maybe the best thing I've seen on CAF all year.

A unique look into a hidden world long past and scarcely remberrd. Loved the extra images you provided. Good luck unravelling the mystery behind the painting!

I believe this might be the very first Bingham painting I've ever seen done in airbrush and he did it beautiful effect. So great that you have the actual photo ref used for the piece and I also appreciate seeing the other extra photos of Jadin Wong. Really nice!

I think it must be early for him as well. it has an earlier style so maybe he was using airbrush more in his younger days.
I have books and a bunch of period magazines that had articles about Forbidden City and the other S.F. chinese clubs. I even have napkins and a menu from the club. There's even a documentary and clips on youtube. I've done a lot of research but not found any usage of this artwork. Maybe one day...

I was always more of a Noel Toy fan till now - wow, what an image. I see that Forbidden City, USA has the photograph reprinted but not the pin up. What a mystery.

You have have napkins and a menu from the club?!? Wow, how old are they and how'd you come across such esoteric items?

Just stuff from ebay. Mine are probably from the fifties but maybe earlier. I have found a couple "lots" of items people saved from their long ago visits and I grab them to look for any reference to the artwork.
