DescriptionDO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC? Here's an iconic portrait of Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts! Pencilled by the amazing Marshall Rogers and inked by the legendary Terry Austin, this cover to Doctor Strange #49 is an enchanting image of the Sorcerer Supreme. I love all the mystical elements Rogers included here. You’ve got Doctor Strange in his Sanctum Sanctorum, mysteriously floating in the air. The window behind him forms a latticework through which we see stars and planets. Strange is posed in the classic lotus position, sitting cross-legged, hands making a magical gesture. A mystical glow emanates around each hand, from which fiery energy beams rise and almost touch above Strange’s head. Strange has a distant look on his face as if he’s staring past us into some other dimension. Perhaps he's seeing through the open Eye of Agamotto hovering before him, surrounded by twelve discs projecting mystical rays in all directions. Inker Terry Austin enhanced the linework with multiple screen tones to create varying effects. He used one graduated screen tone above Strange’s head to mimic a magical glow flowing directly from his head upwards. He used different screen tones for the sky outside and for the shading on Strange (He painted those areas in blue before adding the tones). The cover is a great example of teamwork between penciller and inker and is signed “Rogers & Austin” in the lower right. While Marshall Rogers isn’t the first name most people think of when they think about Doctor Strange, there are a number of us who believe that Rogers created some of the best art on the title since Steve Ditko.Social/Sharing |

OMMMMMMMMMM! Shhh, let's keep it down, Doc is communing with the universe. Love the multi-tone usage, too! So many great tricks to make this cover pop with Sorcerous Power. The little details, like putting stars in the empty Eye of Agamotto holder, are top-notch. Spellbinding!

Truly mystical! Congrats, Bill! And I fully agree with you that, despite the short run, the Rogers/Austin team created one of the definitive versions of Doctor Strange...

A perfect sentence for Freudian reading. Change the last words to, my stick growth. Well, Magicians are known to be fond of using their wands. Cannot remember Stephen ever using his in a comic (most were pg in nature) but am sure hes got one hidden away.

Wow I love Marshall's small but important run on Dr. Strange and this is his best cover. Like most of his career he seemed to only work on a book for less than 12 issues but he had a great style and Austin inks are perfect as always.

Prime (non Batman) Rogers/Austin Dr Strange cover for sure. The title benefited from so many excellent artists under Roger Stern's tenure.

Really nice to see you add this to your spectacular collection. As a title (and character), Doctor Strange probably doesn't get as much attention for its history of great art the way some other titles do. Most of us can rattle off all the great artists that worked on books like X-Men, Spider-Man, or Avengers. Yet most of us don't think of DS in that way. But just think about the line-up over the years. Ditko, Windsor-Smith, Colan, Kane, Brunner, Golden, Nowlan, Paul Smith, and of course Marshall Rogers. This cover is about as good as it gets from one of those all-stars. Congratulations buddy!

Hypnotic! Rogers and Austin's Marvel mystic masterwork! So many levels of depth with the smooth inks against the screen tone areas to expand the setting beyond the confines of what we perceive with just our eyes.

One fo the all-time classic and greates Doctor Strange covers and not coincidentally, also happens to be done by one of the all-time classic penciller & inker teams. Not only is this an exquisite masterpiece of form and design by Rogers, but TONS of credit must be given to inker Terry Austin, because he brought so much and was responsible for the overall finished look of Rogers' art on every project they worked on together.

Having fallen in love with this art team on their Detective Comics run, I was super excited when I found out Rogers and Austin were teaming back up to take on Doctor Strange. Except for its briefness, it was as good as I'd hoped. Big congrats on getting this superbly iconic cover.

Staggeringly cool cover, from a top artistic team operating at their peak prowess, on one of my favorite characters. Extra points that the more intrusive cover dress elements (including the despised UPC box) are missing from the board, which really showcases how great the art is!

beautiful cover with master level page building. i really do enjoy how the cover appears full with a sense of calm. the attention of details from the lighting scope on the bottom ball of magic is mastefully detailed on the rest of the cover. i could go but i rather just say, you have a home run good buddy. thanks for sharing.

I have a soft spot for Marshall Rogers, possibly because I loved those old Englehart/Rogers Detective issues so very much.
However, whlie the Detective run may have been more seminal and may have had a bigger effect on the character, by the time they got to Dr. Strange, the amazing team of Rogers/Austin had gotten even better, and was creating even more spectacular imagery, including this quite iconic gem. Congratulations on a magical aquisition.
