DescriptionTold myself awhile back that I only need ONE Ron Frenz page but that has turned into owning three (could've had four at one point if I didn't sell one). The quality of stories for Mayday was consistent by Tom DeFalco, looping through from good to great, despite almost being cancelled multiple times and title relaunches. The quality of art was also consistent, however, it can be argued which style is favored more between Frenz, Frenz and Olliffe. Why is Frenz listed twice? Because when launching 'Spider-Girl' in 1998, Frenz was attached to pencil the stories but ended up helping DeFalco launch another MC2 title, 'J2' which was Juggernaut's son on Earth-982 which lasted a year. Then, Frenz would go on to launching 'A-Next' which lasted another year. He would continue to work on other MC2 titles such as 'The Buzz' and 'Darkdevil but it wasn't until Spider-Girl #18 that he would work on the actual series and then returning on #32, then starting #42 in 2002 that he would take over the series from Olliffe as the ongoing artist. Frenz would finish out the series to #100. During his time on MC2, Frenz style was considered more cartoony and dynamic to make it more appealing to the younger readers. At the time, both Frenz and Olliffe would work in the art studio together so they would always see what the other was drawing. Frenz showed admiration of Olliffe's work and would end up changing his style back starting on 'Amazing Spider-Girl' in 2006, to the classic silver age style that he's most known for from working on his past runs such as ASM, Thor and FF. Both Olliffe and Frenz are heavily influenced by John Romita Sr. in drawing characters that are more anatomically proportioned while Frenz may be more meticulous in his approach in drawing figures. Frenz had expressed regret for his cartoony style while working on the Spider-Girl series and would've taken the more traditional approach if he could take it all back. As with most artists being perfectionists and seeing their older work, they may express dislike and point out things they wish they could change. Although I enjoyed both Frenz styles, it's appreciated to see how artists experiment and develop their style over time. Both styles worked for Mayday and don't particularly have a preference. Since I owned a cover from his "cartoony" era, I had wanted something from the later run. Carnage appearances are getting more pricier and thought this was a fun, action-packed page and even greater story. The combination of pencils by Frenz and inks by Buscema are always the perfect match. Social/Sharing |

It has a great 80's look to the art that sets Spider-Girl's universe apart from the rest of the books back then. Carnage with a little guy hostage brings Spider-Girl to action with the dynamism of Frenz and Sal's acrobatic figurework panels.
