Description

Sometimes Harvey's open admiration for EC's ground-breaking comics came into clear focus. This is one of those stories: I think Manny Stallman manages an impressive imitation of Harvey Kurtzman for this war tale. I believe Manny inks his own pencils here, instead of John Giunta doing those chores as was usually the case. Near EC quality, without the EC price tag.

Manny Stallman never delivers a bad job, but I doubt if Harvey Kurtzman would have written a war story about a box of cigars, except perhaps for a Mad parody. The splash is definitely the highlight of the story.

True, it is a very silly story - but not without a simple charm of it's own. I realized after posting these scans that I shouldn't expect much praise for Harvey's second-rate EC rip-offs from the man who owns "If"! But I do find it very interesting to see so clearly how the people at Harvey were aware of, and inspired by, the great comics being published then by EC.
