Recently I read an article that had an interview which revealed that young Ken Selig was the person tasked with inking over any and all cleavage or other offending material in pre-Code Harvey art that was planned to be used in reprints..
Hi George,
I am still obsessed with this piece. Please contact me if there is any chance of doing a deal. :-)
A lot of pre-Code Harvey art got censored for post-Code reprints, but this one didn't - so, yay!
A great piece from a great artist and a great man.
Schomburg is the best. This looks like this illustrates a story called "The Tower." That's the Tower in the top right corner.
Paul B.: Maybe porn-bots? I agree, seems weird. Very nice piece of art, Manara is a master.
This is a great story, really classic!
Very cool homage to Strange Love (Fox Giant #31). Great artwork!
Hi! I don't know if you realize it but this cover is a swipe/homage to the Golden Age romance comics Fox Giant #31 (Strange Love). http://www.samuelsdesign.com/comics/pages/goodgirl-romance/strange_love.htm Best regards, -Ben Samuels
Cool piece! By the way, those are Japanese 5 yen coins. Not Chinese. :-)
That's not an '03, it's a copyright mark and stylized 76. So 1976.
I'm not familiar with the artist but it's beautiful work. Kind of reminds me of Serpieri. (High praise!)
I love Manny Stallman's work and this is a wonderful example of his talents. You have excellent taste in comic art!
What a cool addition to your collection! But what I find most interesting about this piece is that a couple of those kids are smoking cigarettes! (Which is totally not the point of this gag.)
Thanks, yeah I agree but since Lundgren never worked in comics I figured Schomburg would be better appreciated by the CAF crowd. :-)
This is so really, really, great! I can't believe I'm making the first comment. I hope you still have the rest of the story, but simply didn't have the time to scan and post it. Congratulations on getting an outstanding example of an obscure and rare (but very talented) artist's work. I admire your excellent taste in non-superhero comic art.
Hi Lars, Do you own the original art for this story? I think the artist is Leonard Starr. Best regards.
It looks "Powell-ish" but I think this might actually be Ernie Schroeder art. A great page, either way.
Hi Khwan, Sawasdee Khap, Nice page. The art is by Bill Draut, in his early style. From a Harvey comic, probably First Love, First Romance, or Hi-School Romance. -Ben Samuels
Hi Aaron, Thanks for the comment. I know your cover, it's a great one. There WAS a Harvey horror story involving a guy being eaten by rats (like your cover) but it was published in a different issue. The only similarity between your cover and my story from that issue is the title!
I don't really care for tattoos, but if you've got to get one I agree that Kirby is the way to go! You're a very dedicated fan, and selected a great image.
Very nice! I used to own a page from this book.... For my money, Ordway is second only to Terry Austin for inks over Byrne. Personally, I don't care much for Byrne unless he's inked by Austin or Ordway, but when they do work together -- WOW!
Jeebus! Your new updates almost leave me at a loss for words. I wonder if will you ever feel like Alexander the Great - surveying the extent of your collection, and weeping at the thought that there is no more mind-blowing comic art left to acquire?
Wiseman is one of the all time greats. Been wanting a piece of his artwork for some time -- where is it all hidden??? Congratulations on a wonderful piece of art.
Awesome fog effects. Is it just me or does some of the art look just like prime Steve Ditko? I think this must be one of Stallman/Giunta's finest efforts. It broke my heart to sell this one... if you ever decide to part with it, I hope I get first dibs!
GREAT piece! Can't believe I'm the first to comment...
This is a really great page... I used to own it! And how about the lion and gorilla sketches on the back? Cool stuff.
Indeed. I was really scratching my head wondering how the tanks bagged those Migs!
True, it is a very silly story - but not without a simple charm of it's own. I realized after posting these scans that I shouldn't expect much praise for Harvey's second-rate EC rip-offs from the man who owns "If"! But I do find it very interesting to see so clearly how the people at Harvey were aware of, and inspired by, the great comics being published then by EC.
I have discovered that this beauty was originally published as "Unfaithful" in Hi-School Romance #10 (1951).
I guess I should provide background? Humphrey was a friend and sometime sparring partner of Joe Palooka. Humphrey is very fat, but is super-strong and while dim-witted he has a heart of gold. His "day job" is working as a blacksmith, and I suspect he is a distant relative of Little Lotta. Humphrey had his own comic series, "Humphrey Comics" (published by Harvey) which ran for a respectable 22 issues from 1948 to 1952.
Just checking back in again. This is from First Love #1, it's page three from the third story in the issue, titled "Dateless". I am now of the opinion that the art is all Draut, that is, both pencils and inks.
Nice cover, Al Avison art (as usual). This is from First Romance Magazine #38 (Feb. 1956).
