DescriptionSince Bill Cox introduced Mystery Sketches for $200 way back when I've always been tempted, and even more so by the quality of the art you get for that price. But $200 is the sweet spot for me for published pages that has restrained me from participating in the Mystery Sketch event. Then Bill introduced Mystery Sketch Cards at CAL's May 2025 event for $60 and I figured what the hell? Low stakes. Given that I have not purchased anything in the previous few CAL shows this was a fun way to participate.I always thought the Mystery Sketch event would be a good opportunity to pick up art of characters that would be otherwise hard to find on a published page. One of those is The Bombastic Bagman from The Amazing Spider-Man #258 in his only appearance (for years). Peter Parker sensing something suspicious about his new black costume pays a visit to the Baxter Building to see Mr. Fantastic about running some tests on his new duds. While Peter is separated from his symbiote costume, The Fantastic Four lends him one of their spare costumes to cover himself up. The only problem is that FF don't use masks! Not one to pass up the opportunity, Johnny Storm trolls Ol' Webhead by handing him a paper sack to cover his face. I figure every masked hero is a mystery, but what bigger mystery than a person wearing a Fantastic Four costume and a paper bag over his head? Too perfect a theme for a Mystery Sketch. Quite honestly I'd never been aware this version of Spider-Man until Hasbro Marvel Legends released a Target Exclusive figure of The Bombastic Bagman. My son and I loved creating silly poses with it and it's probably one of my favorite figures. He and I lost our shit when we spotted Bagman's cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse. Here I present to you The Bombastic Bagman Mystery Sketch Card by Ryan Odagawa represented by TDArt. I absolutely love Ryan's composition to instill more confidence in Peter Parker. Ryan's colors are dead on keeping with 80s tone with a splash of modern. It's a fun card--like seeing your kitten getting mad. I'm just fascinated how artists like Ryan make it look so easy. I'm very pleased with my first Mystery Sketch experience. Much gratitude goes to Bill, Ryan, and Tatiana Dykes of TDArt for it. Tatiana was professional in her communication as always. As a former resident of The Bay Area, I'm glad it was Tatiana and TDArt who handled the commission. Thank you friends and readers! 2-1/2" x 3" Marker on sketch card Social/Sharing |

I loved his appearance in the Spider-verse movie as a deep cut!
