DescriptionBeen looking for a great example of Travis Charest's work and picked up this gorgeous group portrait of the 1990's superhero group, WildCATS Covert-Action Teams. Penciled by Charest and inked by the incredible Scott Williams, the portrait includes five of the team's most popular characters--Spartan, Void, Zealot, Grifter and Emp. Drawn originally as a promo piece and poster promoting the comic, it was later used as the cover for James Robinson's Complete WildCATS TPB #1. Studying the powerful layout, the strong figurework and the beautifully flowing lines, you can really appreciate the combined talents of Charest and Williams.Scott Williams commented: "I'm pretty sure this was the very first piece of art Travis penciled for Homage Studios (later-Wildstorm) and you could just see the potential. Still heavily influenced by Jim, Travis already had some terrific aesthetic sizzle. After I inked this piece, I thinned down my line work when I inked some pinups and the Wildcats Annual over Travis. His stuff was delicate and had a lot of subtle finesse that my ink line needed to accommodate. It was a real challenge!" Social/Sharing |

I'm completely oblivious to the WildCATS stories but this is one hell of a compelling piece! Beauty.

Lord Emp looks a lot like Marlon Brando. Very cool 90's Charest! His meticulous drawings back then was perfect for Scott Williams to ink as it fit the famed Wildstorm look! WildCATs early issues are definitive 90's Image era fun! This celebration of them is quite a welcomed sight!

I think Charest's facial features were the best of his trinity with Lee and JSC. Congratz on this big boy!

This to me is THE definitive WildC.A.T.s image. I think the poster was hanging in every comic book store I frequented at one point, not to mention the house ad as you've pointed out. Congrats on this wonderful pickup!

When Charest took over the art for Wildcats and began to establish his own artistic identity (peaking with his glorious Wildcats/X-men crossover), it was cause for celebration. So I found the choice to use an older piece (1993) that actually predates the works being collected (94-95) as the cover for the TPB interesting. Once Charest became "Charest", there were those who dismissed his early Lee-aping work. But I really loved it. I was probably one of the few who grumbled when he started to move away from it. Of course that all changed after I saw his full evolution. But I really do enjoy both periods of his career. Anyway, I imagine as a publisher it was more expedient to use an older piece than to wait for the notoriously slow Charest to draw a new one. LOL! By the way, I think you and I are part of a pretty exclusive club. We each have our own early Charest Wildcats promo piece. Welcome to the club and congratulations on this beauty.

It looks like he's going to throw a split-fingered fastball. The ref might want to check out the ball, tho, it looks juiced. What a sweet Wildcats promo/cover! Charest and Williams killed it here, with great composition and inks. Very cool score. Congrats!

I like the color on the poster version best... it gives the highly rendered line art some space to breathe. I had no idea that Steve Gerber wrote for this series!

Early Charest work is a guilty pleasure of mine and I actually prefer it to his more "high brow" later work
(which I still like). Great example by a great artist !

There's Lee & Williams and then there's Travis & Scott. I have strong associations with Travis Charleston and Wild CATS and this is just the perfect piece.

Travis, for me, will forever be tied to these characters. The work he did on WildCATs was astonishing. Every issue got better and better. Congrats on this lovely piece of Travis history.
