DescriptionThe X-Files and Carl Kolchak! (Part 2 of 2) Based on the success of “The Night Stalker (1972)” and “The Night Strangler (1973),” ABC brought back Carl Kolchak for the television series “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” in 1974-75 for 20 episodes. Chris Carter, creator of “The X-Files,” would later say that “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” played a “tremendous influence” on “The X-Files,” which would air for 11 seasons from 1993 to 2002. But like “The X-Files,” “Kolchak: The Night Stalker,” to me, was more than just the “monster of the week.” Carl Kolchak was played by Darren McGavin. McGavin did a lot of television and film in his long career, but these days, is probably best remembered as the dad in “A Christmas Story (1983)” who won a lamp shaped like a female leg. With Kolchak, McGavin brought a humor to the series which was unlike other horror/mystery shows. Like all good shows, an ensemble cast is important. Kolchak had many guests stars each week, but for me, the most fun is watching him interact with his boss Anthony “Tony” Vincenzo played by Simon Oakland. Oakland did tons of television in his career and his most notable film credits include “Psycho” (1960) and “West Side Story” (1961). Once again, with this piece, I tried to pay tribute to one of my favorite “Amazing Spider-Man” covers (#124) drawn by John Romita (1973). I reimagined a story in which Kolchak’s boss, Tony Vincenzo, has been turned into a werewolf! Since I like to do pieces in “pairs,” it was a no-brainer for me to have Kolchak team-up with Spider-man to solve another mystery involving my favorite tragic werewolf. I hope my friend Vinnie enjoys the humor of this piece as much as I enjoyed doing it. He might even give it the Kolchak stamp of approval! Until next time, it’s back to the drawing board for me!Social/Sharing |
