DescriptionThis is the cover art to Thor #37 (2001) or #539 using the original Journey Into Mystery numbering. Thor is getting beat up by the Destroyer here, while the Watcher is doing his thing. I was happy to pick this up during one of the earlier Dueling Dealers episodes on CAF's YouTube channel. While Jim Starlin drew his most memorable stories in the 70's, he was still doing some nice work in the early 2000's, especially when inked by his old friend, Al Milgrom. A lot of Starlin/Milgrom pieces from this period were signed Gemini, which stands for "Jim and I". For some reason Starlin drew this upside down, but it's on standard Marvel cover art board. The bottom of the scan got slightly cut off due to technical limitations. Social/Sharing |

Finally! I was wondering when you were going to post this, Ted! You're so right, Starling was still putting out pretty nice work 20 years ago. This is such a great cover, so I'm glad you ended up with it. As for why he drew it upside down? Simple: He grabbed the board without looking, put it down on his table and went to work. I've seen it happen often!

I think he used the board this way because for the longest time, the margin at the top was bigger where the book title, issue, and page was noted. This newer kind of board has room for all that notation on the bottom.

Good point! That totally makes sense.
