DescriptionHere's an absolutely stunning Avengers cover by the great George Perez! The cover depicts a celebration in New York City’s Central Park to salute the 35th Anniversary of the Avengers. Perez goes all out to show us the cheerful festivities with five Avengers—Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Firestar and Justice—all up on a stage, waving to fans. Another fifteen Avengers are pictured on balloons drifting through the crowd. Perez is incredibly skilled at drawing complex scenes like this one with huge casts of characters. He fills the scene with an incredible amount of detail, from the painted "A" on the face of an excited kid to the "Sock it to Shell Head" button on the baseball cap of another fan. The Avengers' uniforms are intricately detailed, as are the buildings and trees in the background. The whole scene is a swarm of activity. But looming above the banner announcing the Avengers’ Anniversary is the scowling visage of the Grim Reaper, swinging his deadly scythe, an ominous warning that this Anniversary Celebration is about to turn very, very ugly. IMHO, it's a fantastic cover by a phenomenal talent and I'm thrilled to add it to my collection.Social/Sharing |

I didn't always love later Avengers work by Perez, having such a fondness for his early work on the title. But this was a great cover. Congrats!

MONUMENTAL!! And so memorable!! A Perez MASTERPIECE! With an intricately detailed cover like this, with all the special nuances you mentioned and MORE, you MUST frame it and hang it on the wall. Cuz every time you look at it, you'll see something you previously missed. Congrats, Bill, you continue to amaze with your astounding additions.

I remember this one well. One of my favorites from his great run. Brilliantly designed in so many ways. The title logo on the banner, the faces on the balloons (and all the faces in the crowd as well), just the right spattering of buildings and trees in the background, a great shot of the story's villain, and of course the Big Three front and center. Not sure you could have found a better Avengers example. Congratulations sir!

This is one of my favourite covers of this Avengers run, Bill, congratulations on making such a wonderful acquisition! Pérez was still on top of his game at this point in his career and it is evident in each and every little bit of inked detail. This cover is even more meaningful to me now, and I hope to you as well, in that it feels like the image is now intended more as a celebration of Pérez's life and career than anything else!

Wow. Thanks for leaving me everything in your will! I expect your avatars imaginary friend will turn feral anyday now. I mean he pounces on the little guy a lot, with claws out....Attacks by imaginary animals on imaginary boys do not result in real life death for the avatar holder? You didn't make that will?

Classic Pérez group shot with all of the detail and dynamism you would hope for. I prefer his DC work but there's no doubt that he embraced his return to Marvel in the 90s and gave it all he had on his extended Avengers run.

One of the best of this last Perez run of the Avengers! It shows that Perez really loves the fandom and wanted to represent the love he felt from fans by putting it on a cover.

Stupendous Perez second run cover. I always liked Perez' take on the Grim Reaper and this is another great example, plus what great Avenger character inclusion. Enjoy!

I think the biggest knock again Perez was that he rarely drew more than one character on a cover and phoned it in on the backgrounds. ;) There has never been, nor will there ever be, someone like George. He put hours into his covers and interiors.

As you sauf it is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Perez was a superb and high skilled artist. The level of detail of this cover is colossal. You only have to put the atention at the bottom left side. There is a guy in the crowd whose watch is the Cap's Shield!!!

Perez did some great work on Avengers (even if I wasn't reading it then), and this is a great team shot here. Though he could've maybe tried to squeeze in a few more Avengers- he left some blank spaces here and there ;) Still, I dig all the little easter eggs he was able to fit into the background. "Face the Busiek" indeed. Congrats!

George Pérez is sorely missed- a modern master whose passion for comics shone through in his work, and a kind and friendly individual in person. From idea to execution, this cover is an exceptional example of the great man's work.

So much fun that it takes time to grasp it all! Personally, I go for the Jarvis head (btw, the only major figure missing here, isn't it?), the "Face the Busiek and dance" half-hidden figure (is that him?) and the "Justice for all or just me" sign. But I'm sure there are tons of private jokes, hidden messages and real-life people standing on the ground that I have not picked up yet. It would almost deserve throwing a contest! But, for you, Bill, this cover spells endless joys! Congrats!

Fantastic Perez cover. George really knew how to lay it out and pack it with details. It seems so organic that you almost take the incredible detail for granted. It's not forced or shoved in your face. It's just how it should be including all the detail in the camera, the rings on the fingers and messages on the t-shirts. Then, looming over it all is the villain. Just a wonderful piece. Congrats Bill!

I love how you got the super hopeful happy inage of the team juxtaposed with the Reaper literally about to cut through that banner, which doubles as the title lettering, up top! I looked at this one closely, too...Perez went to town EVERYWHERE. No corner spared given the trademark cartoony and uber detailed treatment. Love all the clean lines on the team, and also takes me back to one of my favorite times reading comics. The Heroes Return series were all winners, with each creative team just knocking their runs out the park. Including this one :) Congrats!

In just three plus days, you have generated over 67 comments. You know that you have a great posting when you have that many comments. I thought that you might have been the winning bidder for the Avengers 161 cover on the most recent HA Signature event, and I was looking forward to your hopefully winning that cover. That cover would have looked great in your collection and would have been a spectacular acquisition. Enough of that - this is a great Grim Reaper cover.

Another SUPERB add, Bill! Just...WOW. Everything you would want in a George Perez cover... and MORE. This, honestly, is my favorite era of his work, and I remember being completely floored at the time that he could maintain a monthly schedule turning out work like this (and it felt like there were a bunch of double-sized issues on a pretty regular basis, too)... There's no end to the exquisite detail here, but your eye never strays far from the assembled gaggle of heroes, brilliantly rendered in all their majesty... and when it does stray (to take in a balloon or t-shirt design: "A Jarvis Head (and proud of it!)", "Face The Busiek And Dance!"), it pops right back over to the Avengers, smiling, and exuding the strength and confidence we rely on to let us know we're alright: it's all going to be okay. Simply phenomenal work by an undisputed master, Bill. EPIC score: congrats!!
