I got this piece from a good friend as a Moebius inks and Liberatore painted cover. This is also the credits it was listed under when sold at auction over a decade ago. It took a bit of work, the help of friends and someone able to talk directly with Liberatore to sort out exactly what this is. The original imaage is by Moebius. This particular image was used in 3 places and all quite differently finished. One as a portfolio piece from the Fusion book, the second as the cover to Moebius in L.A. and the third is this cover. The inks are likely a print that have been painted over by Liberatore but possibly the original pencils too since it had to be reinked. He has extensively re-inked parts of this and modified designs, and patterns. I would consider this a finished, painted cover by Liberatore with Moebius pencils/layouts Although the image was created by Moebius, I consider it all Liberatore. Regardless, a great image and unlikely collaboration by two of the greatest European comic creators at a time they were both in their prime.

Another short, funny story to go with this. When I was first offered this piece, i was told it was Frigidaire. In Canada, Frigidaire is a major appliance brand. I thought it was some sort of strange promotional piece done by Moebius for an appliance company. It was not until the art came with copy of the magazine did it all make sense. I really didn't care where it was from, I liked the image but having it from a cover of a comic art and sci-fi magazine is that much better.

This piece is happily framed and on my wall. I would consider trading it for good Tardi, Pratt or Herriman.

Well, I'm not sure that Frigidaire can be properly called a Sci-Fi magazine :) Seriously, I've always considered this piece nothing short of amazing and now it's nice to know something more about such an incredible collaboration!
