Description

I have been a big fan of Gibrat's work since I first encountered it in the first English translation of Le Surris which was translated as Flight of the Raven. It is beautifully illustrated story of two sisters involved in the French resistance in WWII. It is a great story but it is the art that shines through. I came to Gibrat's work late as an art collector and already prices were very high. I am happy to add this page from his follow up series, Matteo which takes place around WWI. This half splash featured many panels with Lea and culminates into a great giant panel with all of Gibrat's skills on display. It is published in the second volume in English. You can see the panels are not centered on the original page and the top and bottom halves are on different sized boards. In addition there is a replacement panel on the top tier. Below you can see the art that is under the panel as well as a scan of the page in English.

Beautiful, inspired work! I just recently discovered this book. The faces, figures, drapery, backgrounds, and colors are wonderful

Great artist. I saw his Jeanne and Cecile art book before reading the stories. So happy IDW published English editions. I'm happy you got a great page.
