DescriptionAnd now for something completely different--An EC Comics' Frontline Combat cover penciled and inked by the legendary Harvey Kurtzman. Covers by Kurtzman are scarce as hen's teeth. And this one, drawn twice up, is simply spectacular. Unlike most EC artists, Kurtzman's style is very minimalist--simple, sleek and sophisticated. But while Kurtzman's work is less detailed than other EC artists, it's no less compelling.Kurtzman, of course, is one of the legends of the comic art world. He first made his mark at EC, writing, drawing, and editing Frontline Combat and Two-Fisted Tales. A few years later he cemented his reputation by creating Mad Magazine for EC and then helping turn it into a full-sized magazine. Kurtzman later created the color comic strip Little Annie Fanny with Will Elder for Playboy Magazine. But this cover, from early in his career, hits all the right buttons for me. Thanks to Joe Shaffer for letting this beauty go! Social/Sharing |

Wow! Just wow! I honestly can't think of any other publication that had such a stellar line up of comic artist legends. Frazetta, Eisner, Wood, Kubert, Heath, Toth, Williamson, Krenkel, Feldstein, Ingels, Crandall, Elder, and so many more. All icons and masters of the medium. Seeing this historical Kurtzman cover in your amazing collection comes as no surprise to me. For someone with your impeccable taste, I would expect no less. My heatfelt congratulations.

69-year old beauty! Museum piece all the way.
Best to frame it behind cannon proof glass ;)

Whoah.
Kurtzman was one of a handful of creators who can rightfully be called a master of the craft, and a true pioneer... an auteur (like Eisner), even. You could flash an image of this cover for a micro-second at subliminal speed and we'd all know what it is and how consequential and cool it is.
Bill, your ability to curate a museum quality collection of aesthetic and historic significance has earned this cover the highest rating that I can offer, when words fall into insignificance....
ADEQUATE!!!!!

Joe bought this cover from me some years back, so it will hopefully stay put in its new home for the foreseeable future!

I can never get enough of Kurtzman's Frontline Combat work - one of the true high points of the entire medium.
