Description

This is art from a rather obscure one-shot comic giveaway
for a store called "Foleys"; circa 1982. To this day, nobody
draws a Peter Parker/ J Jonah Jameson quite like John Romita.
And this page is a perfect example of that. Now; speaking of
Mr. Romita…..
Back around 1996/ '97, before home telephones became almost
obsolete, I was struck with a great idea. I
thought; "I wonder if I could call information, and get John
Romita's telephone number". And, believe it or not, information
gave me the number. During this period I was still relatively
new to the original comic art scene, and hadn't met John in
person yet. So; taking a deep breath, I began to dial the number
of one of my all-time heroes, and definitive Spider-Man artist.
After a couple of rings, the Jazzy one actually answered the phone.
I introduced myself, and told John what a lifelong fan I was of his.
Now, looking back, this was a pretty brazen/ ballsy thing of me
to do. And John would have been in his right to tell me off,
never to call his home again. But quite the contrary. Mr. Romita
was extremely kind, polite, genuine, and giving of his time. We actually
spoke for over 30 minutes. And to me, this was the thrill of a lifetime.
During the coarse of our conversation, I inquired to Mr. Romita
if I could commission him to do a Spider-Man piece for me. He
politely declined because of so many commitments he'd already
made. (*including one to Stan Lee himself*) But it really didn't
matter to me. Just to have the honor of conversing over the phone,
with this living legend, was good enough for me. So with all that
being said; "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. ROMITA". You're still tops in
my book, and always will be. 'nuff said.. ;)

Great page and a great story, Daniel! Classic shots of characters so synonymous with John on this page and SO cool you got to spend some time with him on the phone. Not just a master of the medium but also a great guy!  Congrats!
