DescriptionLOVE BATMAN. Here's a striking Batman illustration by the very talented Jeffrey Alan Love. Love’s art is very unique--He works primarily in black and white, using large blocks of grey tone and strong silhouettes. You'd think his style would be very limiting, but Jeffrey has created dozens of illustrations of everything from knights on horseback to horned demons to...Batman. When I saw this illustration of the Dark Knight, I thought it so unique and so cool that I had to buy it. As you can see, there’s a silhouette of Batman's cowl with sharp, peaky shoulders framing the bottom of the illustration. Above that there is a stylized cityscape with an enormous black bat, its wings fully extended, towering over a tall pointed skyscraper. My first thought was that the Bat was like King Kong on top of the Empire State Building, but the more I thought about it, I realized that the enormous Bat was a metaphor for the way Batman dominates the very city he’s pledged to protect. The image of the Bat--with two tiny red dots for eyes--is frightening, which if you recall, was Bruce Wayne’s original intent—-To strike terror in the hearts of criminals. IMHO, it’s a cover-worthy piece of art and I'm delighted to add it to my collection. Thanks Felix!Social/Sharing |

An amazing interpretation of the Dark Knight and the cit yhe protects. I do love those tiny red eyes -- they are definitely perfect for terrifying evil doers. And what a cool artistic choice to frame the city from above and below with Batman's cape! Total winner, and so cover worthy!!

Well this piece frightens me. Not that I'm a bad guy ot anything. Well there was that one time I got 15 cents change from 2 quarters for my 40 cent comic. Instead of returning the extra nickel I pocketed it and battered to Jeebus. I still sleep with one eye open expecting Batman to come calling every night. At least I hope it will be Batman and not the Punisher. :(

The textural effect on this piece is incredible. Can't wait to see what sequential work JAL is cooking up.

The red bat eyes remind me of Lynn Varley's colors in DKR. Criminals are a superstitious cowardly lot. The Batman is the physical form but the frightening bat silhouette is how criminals perceive him.

I think Love's style actually WOULD be limiting if he was to attempt to employ it as a monthly storyteller in comics, but that doesn't appear to be his intent. The thing I find most interesting about him is that he does seem to have a love for mainstream superheroes, yet his style of work had all the sensibilities of a fine artist. I could see this work being included as part of an art gallery exhibit, more than I can see it being used for comics. A lovely looking piece and a fine acquisition, Bill.

You've described JAL's work quite well. Visually arresting with a very distinct style yet, somehow, he manages to surprise every time. Congrats.

Striking Batman piece. Love the little red eyes on this one as the only minute color on the piece drawing the eye back to center.

The Caped Crusader, The Bat and the Dark City are inseparable! A modern gothic view of the Myth! IMHO ... a MASTERPIECE!

We should consider ourselves lucky that JAL crossed over to comic art. I had the surprise pleasure of meeting Jeff at a tiny comic-con in San Antonio a month before the pandemic. He explained how he discovered his technique haphazardly using his wife's craft sponges. He didn't bring any published artwork (or his art tools darn it!) but he did bring his sketchbook and it's quite the thing to see his art irl. He even had published book covers in there! Talk about unavailable art! I don't know if this was a commission or illustration, Bill, but it's certain a good pickup.

It looks like it is done in layers with texture levels! The whole thing resembles a beast with Gotham in its jaws!

Wonderfully expressive technique on display here... reminds me a little of Edward Gorey's mastery of tone and silhouette.

Impressive. I think Love could have limited himself to the giant black bat. But then again, the dark/light effect with the Batman below plus the "maw" effect between the two pointy capes is nice and clever.

A great looking piece that inspires thought. The city between two bats one a creature, one a man, one light the other dark. The shapes and layout are very eyecatching. Really like this one.

Hell, yeah, that's a cover quality piece! He's almost achieve a stencil quality, it's so clean, but such an interesting application of the ink/paint. And the composition is excellent. I would not be shocked if this gets published at some point. Alfred approves! Sick

Hauntingly beautiful. I love the way JAL makes use of the negative space at the bottom of the page and the elemental threat of the bat-creature sillouette.

JAL has a unique illustrator style, and this is a striking image of Batman. On top of the beady red-eyed bat, it looks like the art has its mouth open and teeth bared ready to bite (the horns on Batman's cape, and the tail spikes on the big bat's wings). Definitely not your friendly neighborhood Batman.

Beautiful and haunting piece! An amalgamation of fine art and comics, which remind me of modern Japanese woodblock art
