DescriptionWhile this gallery has so far only contained scans of Cyborg Superman splash pages from the same story arc written by Dan Jurgens and illustrated by Mike Perkins and looks pretty darn good that way, I do enjoy sequential storytelling as well and really don't think it's worth the time to open a separate gallery room just for the panel pages and since I only own five of them, I'm just going to add them here.I have to admit, I always hated Guy Gardner because of his obnoxious nature and only liked him when someone else was giving him a beat down. JLI #5 will always hold a special place in my heart for the classic and embarrassing one punch knockout of Guy by Batman. Over time though, the writers slowly but surely wrote him as less obnoxious and he was given moments to shine, so I slowly grew to tolerate him if not outright like him. I also have to admit though, that even had he never been written as obnoxious, there's a good chance I would've disliked seeing him in books I read for no other reason than I couldn't stand the bowl cut he always wore. Thankfully, artists began to give him different hairstyles along the way and it improved his look a thousandfold, as we see here! This is one such depiction of him and I think he looks great. But to be perfectly frank with you all, it was his usage of his power ring to make a "Three Stooges" styled construct to poke an alien in the eyes that made me buy this page. Not that I was ever a Stooges fan by any means, but their antics became so well known across so many generations that you just can't help recognizing pop culture references to them. Also, I strive to collect pieces that bring the FUN out of collecting and this piece does exactly that. That the page is also nicely balanced by having the bottom panel featuring Jessica and Baz book ending the two inset middle panels, is just a nice bonus. I've been meaning to post this page for quite some time but kept forgetting. But since I'll be hanging out with with my pal Shemp (Shemp's Place here on CAF) on Comic Art ONE on ONE live this Sunday night, it reminded me about my need to post this, so here we are, in your honor, Ceasar! Sorry, I have to disagree.....it was Moe who did most of the eye poking :)

Although no lettering or sound effects are present in the art, my brain autofilled a "DOINK!" into that first panel. Definitely a fun page.

I'm on the same page with you regarding Guy Gardner during his Justice League days. I think they started to make him more tolerable when he had his own series during the first half of the 1990s, particularly after they gave him the "Warrior" identity after Hal Jordan went nuts. Perkins did a wonderful job here from Guy swooping down up top to the newer Lanterns getting into the action at the bottom.

I've always loved Guy Gardner, especially in his bowl cut, PE teacher days.

Nyuck nyuck nyuck! I love it when the FUN factor is amped to the max on a page like this, and I will agree with Jessica there in the bottom panel when she says "Gardner. Have to admit ... The man has style." Really fantastic page. And Guy's haircut is so much better here!

As always, Mike's art is great! Also, as always, your description itself is worth the price of admission - love reading your write-ups!

I would punch out my Guy
I would poke out their eyes
But the wash thereof would leave me Perkins art style
Never have doubt
Turn it inside out
Find nothin' but faith in drawin'
Want to put my Gardner art in a blender
Watch it spin 'round to then beat him to oblivion
Guy's a stooge then I'm through with you
A dumb, dumb in a stupid jacket
Bowl cut is such a fail
I see that Guy had gotten stale
The knock out of his block is painful
All sane and logical
I want this art to frame on wall
I hear words of love and praises
I think sick Mike Perkins tale
Got my Green Lanterns and I exhale

Those are dastardly antics towards such nice large eyes. I might have missed that part until you mentioned it. Fun page.

Hilarious page, Rubén! I can't help but think of how much fun comics creators MUST be having when they write or draw Guy Gardner. It seems like they all try to outdo each other in setting down on paper the most annoying and self-centered things they can think of to ascribe to Guy's actions or worldview. From the bowl cut, to his unbridled ego, to what feels like a core pettiness sometimes, Guy allows creators a vehicle to vent their creative spleens (as it were), like some sort of therapy... It certainly makes for a fun examination of what makes a hero, and I had to roll my eyes (in that "gotta love him") kind of way when I saw not only the Stooge-like eye poking in panel one, but the "dropping the weight" and "dustbroom sweep" manifestation of his power ring in panel 2. Not even CLOSE to anything noble or heroic. SO funny. :)
Mike's work here is (of course) wonderful, and it's always a treat to see you open the archives and share more of your Perkins pages! :) Thanks, Rubén!

Very cool page by Mike Perkins. I agree that Guy Gardner's fingers extending almost out of the frame is a sly bit of artistic humor not to mention artistic forshortening! Fun pick-up!

Pure GL goodness! Like the way the 2 splashy shots sandwich the panels in teh middle! The uneven panel borders work to nice effect, too. And of course, got some grey tone accents! Very nice, Ruben. Congrats!
