DescriptionAnother Wildstorm upload this year to celebrate and what a piece! These wraparound connecting cover(s) were used both for a Wildcats and an Authority cover. If you love comics, you have to love connecting covers ^^ Now truth be told, I didn’t read those particular books nor do I own them as this was Wildstorm downhill for me at this stage. And if I am allowed to be picky, many of those designs are not the originals or those I like. BUT… What a double cover! Basically all of the notable Wildstorm heroes are present and this was a major geek bonus for me. And even though I complain about it, all of them are easily recognizable. Majestic, Apollo, Midnighter, Voodoo, Maul, Swift, Hawksmoor, Gen 13, Stormwatch, Wildcats! Can you name them all? Now to comment on the artist. Chris Sprouse has contributed here and there to the Wildstorm titles. I wish he’d done more as I absolutely love his art and have since his debuts in the industry. Such a clean and precise line in the Gaijin style. A fantastic if “quiet” storyteller as well. I find that he made great use of the characters to draw this cover. Using the size changing Maul to position many of the important ones on his hand is an excellent idea. The mountainous surroundings are a simple but quite effective idea. It works well and allow for the gigantic Maul as well as the flying characters on the right without forgetting the various teams on the ground on the different plateaus. Chris’ super precise and limpid line really shine here with his trademark little crosses to spot the blacks (and his male character’s mouths). And in Chris’s case, the pure pencils are always a fantastic thing to behold. I really like what he did with Appollo and Midnighter, the Batman & superman of the Wildstorm universe. The happy over powerful force and the mean bastard from the shadows. Voodoo is also quite nice as is badass Zealot. Also of note is the spatial relation between the characters which I find extremely well done and believable. This is one of Chris’s strength to me as is his portraying of believable body language in his pages. On the same note, he is one of those (rare? Few?) artists who draw flying heroes believably. Look at those three on the right. All of them are positioned in a realistic manner with a true sense of weight in the air, of movement in their clothes. Again, quiet but brilliant bits of storytelling. Now if you were wondering at the beginning of my description why I bought this piece as I was bit negative, you see now that I find MANY positive elements in this great piece of art by a splendid artist, a true modern master. PS: it is also a nice complement to my Carlos Pacheco wraparound Wildstorm cover which you will find in my gallery ;) This is part 7 of my 2019 CAF birthday celebration. Social/Sharing |
