DescriptionThis cover features Kitty Pryde and Wolverine duking it out in Japan! Okay, it's just a clone of Wolverine, as the real one had been killed off early on in this series. In typically confusing Claremont fashion, Kitty was suddenly (magically?) imbued with one of Wolverine's claws, which was missing from Wolverine's charred skeleton when the cops found it out in Central Park. She also absorbed a part of his healing factor. She tracked the clone to Japan and found out this clone wants the real Wolverine's missing claw back, badly, which is why they engage in the battle seen here. I love the way Grummett drew the claws, as they really do look a lot closer to natural bone than the sharply edged ones that all of the 90's artists were drawing.I also really love all of the pencil rendering, which is tight, but still loose enough for a good inker to add their own touch as they tighten it up for publication. The reason the cover is in pencil form only is simply because the bi-weekly schedule of this series took its toll on many of the artists involved with it and as the deadline for this cover to be submitted approached, neither of the 2 regular cover inkers, Cory Hamscher & Terry Austin, were able to finish it on time. So Andrew Hennessy was tasked to provide the inks and did a great job with it. Take a look at the additional images I've posted to see what the finished inks look like. The blood spattered background you see on the comic book was created digitally, hence why you don't see it on either the pencilled board or the inked one. The published inks can now be found complete with a photocopy of the blood spatter background and logo pasted onto it, on the Coollines website, complete with all the information about it being "inks only" and for a very fair price, I'm sure. Lovely tight pencils for sure and action poses..

Awsome Ruben! That's probably the most accurate representation of what bone claws would actually look like if they were a thing.

This may sound odd but theres one thing I always look for in a Wolverine piece... Hairy Arms! Haha - This one nailed it. Really nice piece Ruben. Congrats!

Do you have all the Grummett art yet?
:-)
I think you really need to add the inks to make it complete.
But it's really nice on its own.

No, not yet, still working on it! As for the inks, I used to own them and stupidly sold at auction, which is how Coollines ended up with it! Sigh....

Totally see what you're saying as far as the pencils being tight enough to enjoy stand alone, but also loose enough for an inker to do their thing. Love the claws, too, and it actually reminded of the X-Men Forever 23 cover you also just recently posted. Male and female X characters are flipped, though :) Congrats on another sweet Grummett add!

Ah, we get Kitty Pryde channeling some Rogue by absorbing Wolvy's healing factor and one of his claws. Love the pencils here, and Drew Hennessy's inks are outstanding as always. Beautiful piece!!

Fantastic cover pencils! Thanks for your description which helps with the claw of Kitty. And I like your kind of humor with the inks. Congrats, Ruben

Another solid, SOLID Grummett piece, Ruben - wow. And you know it's good, because it makes me curious about the issue (even in the face of your plot summary / warning about what I'd find inside :) ). I'm sorry you no longer have the inks to accompany it (Andrew Hennessey always does great work), but there's a real life to the pencils that nicely carries the energy of the piece. Really cool, Ruben - congrats!

Joints in the bone claws? Huh, that makes some sense, and looks waaay more disturbing, imo. Claws shooting out of your knuckles should be disturbing. Grummett just makes so many little choices when he's drawing, and really adds to the thoughtfulness of his images. Maybe that's why they always seem to work so well. Simple fight scene, yet so cool. The Kitty Claw, while fitting for her name, is kind of freaking me out. ;) Another great piece, Rubén. Congrats!
