DescriptionThis cover features a fabulous rendition of the character, Perfect Storm! For the X-Men fans among you who've never read this series, here's a brief recap of what has led to this moment. The overarching plot of the series is that the team is on a mission to find a cure for "Mutant Burnout", a condition they discovered which causes mutant life expectancy to be far shorter than the average human. In the two issues previous to this one, both of whose covers I've already posted in this gallery, Mr. Sinister's Wolverine clone has returned and is looking to kill Kitty Pryde. Together with Lil' 'Ro, the seemingly time displaced younger version of Ororo you all remember from X-Men #266 who was a thief and partner to Gambit, they narrowly escape death at the clone's hands but are then arrested in Tokyo. They're promptly freed and betrayed by Mariko, leader of the Yashida Clan, then attacked by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Jean Grey and Gambit make a very timely appearance and help the girls fend off the attack. When the smoke clears however, the X-Men find Lil' 'Ro has been captured and brought before Perfect Storm, The Hand's newest ally. That's where we're at with this cover. To give credit where it's due, I want to point out what a solid inking job Cory Hamscher did with this cover. I've made it clear on several occasions that I wasn't a big fan of pairing Hamscher's Image influenced style on Gummett's pre-Image approach to pencilling. However, I have also often said that he did a pretty nice job on several of the covers, this one being one of those. While many inkers who've broken into the biz during the past generation have a tendency to simply ink over the pencil lines that are there, even when they could use "fixing", Hamscher not only did a lovely job of inking, but more importantly also helped correct the structure of Perfect Storm's face. Grummett had pencilled it a bit too squat and round, making her look more like a girl in her mid teens, but Hamscher made the correct decision to improve the facial structure, giving her the attractive look of the adult woman she's supposed to look like. This is a great example of what good inkers should do when faced with these situations. Some pencillers get upset if their inker changes anything at all, but if an inker sees something that needs obvious fixing and they feel confident enough to make the improvement, then that's exactly what they should do and I doff my cap to Hamscher for doing that here. Well done, Cory. Social/Sharing |

Perfect Storm is right! This is a perfect rendition of Storm. AND she's got the whole world ... in her hands, she's got the whole world .... in her hands! I know, I know, obvious stuff, but I'm the first to comment so I have first dibs!!

Another one! Love to watch this collection of yours grow mightier and mightier. A true testament of homo-superior in the immortality of dry ink. Congrats!

See the Grummett drawin' in Ororo
In the evening a lightning strike
A little light a-shinin' through Tokyo
Lets me glow everything's all right
Art I see makes me feel fine
Grummett draws the X-Men blows my mind
Guaranteed makes me feel fine
Hamscher though the X-Men inks defined
See the weather raining witchy warlock
A little Oro from the house of Storm
So I held the world up in the next step
Through the scene then I look some more
Perfect Storm electrical lines
Glowing through the cover all the time
Grummett art makes it sublime
Drawin' through Forever in my mind

While I don't approve of scarring Storm (gonna have to read up on what happened there! I'm drawing a blank from my old brain), I completely approve of this cover. I love this pose, as Grummett always does, and that Lightning Earth is super cool. And I always appreciate the inker talk. It's a great example of how they support the pencil work and add to the final image. Another nice one, Rubén. Congrats!

Another great, classic Grummett cover. I don't think I've seen Cory ink him before. Very nice.

When it comes to the comic colored versions the color tends to add to the piece. But not here. It's soo crisp and detailed. A beautiful work of art.

Ok, these plots you provide for those covers continue to be as confusing as they shouldn't be but the art can't be faulted :)
Before reading your description, just looking at the different pictures, I was quite surprised by the age difference of the character between pencils and inks stages.
Could it be that Tom thought it was young Ororo that he was to draw? Probably not because of the scar I suppose but he could have wrongly begin to draw the younger version and thought that the scar would fix the drawing up. Pure speculation of course.
And let's give credit when/where it's due, Cory Hamscher did indeed do a great job at fixing the cover so that she appears as an adult. And not an easy task I'd say if you look at the structure of her face at pencil stage. Especially that the end result still looks like Tom's work above anything.

Man, it sounds like Ororo isn't the only one suffering from Mutant Burnout... 😜
Another beautiful Grummett add, Ruben. I agree - the inking here is very solid, with great hair (definitely a must for any image of the Wind-Rider, be she sporting Mohawk or more locks - (not Morlocks)) with fantastic background details adding lots of energy and texture to the image. Congrats, Ruben!

You're right about the inks on this. Hamscher did a superb job with the adjustments. Beautiful finished cover!

Cory Hamscher is supremely talented...and also someone no one should ever buy from.
There are facebook groups filled with people he's taken money from and not delivered to. So, yes, beautiful page! But I hope this doesn't encourage anyone to try to commission him.

Nice depth, nice energy, and of course the pure illustration is tops. Great blend of "real" and "cartoony". And the more and more I see Grummett's stuff, the more and more I like his lady renditions :) Congrats!
