DescriptionI just noticed I hadn't posted a Superman page in over three and a half years, so I figure now is the right time to post another one, and since the Superman film was just released, I thought I may as well post one with some coincidentally timely content. While I did think that Nathan Filion's age stood out quite glaringly, I do have to give him props because he delivered his lines perfectly and props also have to go out to the script writers for keeping him properly in character. As a character that's intended for the audience to love to hate, I think the part was played really well and Ilook forward to seeing Guy Gardner in a future DC film. Anyway, I really love this page because it features a battle of wills, rather than brawn, between Superman and Guy Gardner in a very nice, symmetrical six-panel page layout, which is always pleasing to the eye. This is fairly early work from Grummett, coming 4 years into his career, but perhaps only two years in as a monthly penciller. While I've always been a proponent of crediting the inker, I only do that when I'm positive of who inked a given page. In this case, I'm not. Suffice it to say that this description gives my thoughts on the matter and I'll let that stand, but unless/until I get proof positive, I won't credit an inker using the drop down menu feature. There are four inkers who worked on this issue and while I can see hints of early Denis Rodier's work early in the issue, the tricky part with this page is that the inker used some nice touches of drybrush, something he must've simply experimented with here, because none of the three other inkers who worked on this issue are known for using that technique. Aside from Rodier, Doug Hazlewood, Brad Vancata and Carlos Garzon also contributed inks, with all of them, aside from Garzon, being early in their careers. The page has the look of early Hazlewood, but I just don't feel 100% certain. Either way, the inks look very complimentary over Grummett's pencils this early on in his career and I think it's a great looking page overall, so I was very thankful to acquire it. I own several pages from this issue, so it's tough to remember which ones were purchased from whom, but I believe this was one of a couple of pages that I got from Rob Gomez (aka Wolvie Fan), and I want to shout him out because he reached out to me to ask if I was interested in buying them and historically speaking, people don't reach out to offer me art all that often. So big props to you, Rob! For those of you curious, I give the new Superman film a solid 6 out of 10, which for me means that for all the positive aspects of the film, there are just about as many things that could've been better. All in all, the film met my expectations, as I enjoyed it just about as much as I expected I would and it has just about as many issues that can be improved as I expected there might be. Overall, live action comic book adaptations are always a crapshoot and fraught with risk, which is why I'm happy that as a comic book fan, I always have the original source material to go back to whenever I want. For the best storytelling and visuals, NOTHING beats comic books! Social/Sharing |

Sweet 6-panel layout and great close ups of Clark/Superman and Guy/Green Lantern! Also nice close ups of their hands grasped/clapsed on top of each other, almost as if drawing inspiration from the 1987 "cult classic" film about competitive arm wrestling "Over The Top" starring Sylvester Stallone! An all around great Grummett page regardless of who among those 4 inked it! Your thoughts on the new Superman movie make sense to me. I gave it 8 out of 10 so maybe liked it a bit more than you but I'm guessing my score goes slightly down to a 7 out of 10 if I see it a 2nd time the more I've thought about it since then. Still it was to me overall a decent start for new DC live action content and as you said, the comics are always there as the best examples of these kinds of stories regardless.

Omg, so funny! I remember back around '86 or '87, whenever that movie came out, Stallone had already done 2 or 3 Rambos and he was on top of the world. We all waited breathlessly, thinking "Man, I can't wait to see what movie he does next!". Then commercials for Over the Top start airing and I'm looking at the tv screen thinking "Arm wrestling?!? Wtf is THAT shit?!?" 😂😂😂
Thanks for the elaborate, well thought out commentary, man. I saw you give the movie the 8/10 on Insta before I watched it, but I didn't let that set my expectations bar any higher. I wish you could've been around on Sunday night to get in on the chat about the movie. It was tough because I wanted it to be spoiler free, but we still managed to discuss it for a long time and ultimately never even got to bring up at least 3 or 4 more elements about it that I wanted to talk about. I want to watch it again in a few months after it's available for home viewing, not for the story, but just to focus in on each of the elements I liked and disliked, to see if perhaps my view on them change in any way. It's always best to see things long after nobody is talking about them and any potential excessive hype or negative talk have subsided.

Love the 6 panel layout for this great page. I enjoyed the movie slightly more than you and rate it a 7/10. Certainly not perfect but enjoyable for a Summer flick

Visual theme of this fun page? Hands and diagonals :)
(BTW, imho, there is nothing "solid" about a 6 as it's JUST above the middle line, so thank you for saving me 2h+ of eyes rolling ;)

If you were intending to see it, I recommend you still see it. I'm just one person and my thoughts and views aren't any more valid to your decision making process than your own or anyone else's. A 6/10 CAN be solid, in that foundationally speaking, I feel there is something solid there to build on. We discussed it on my show on Sunday night and several friends gave it 8 and 8.5. It's always best to see and decide for yourself. Besides, with that beautiful new Superman cover you recently got, you gotta go support the man of steel!

Well, as you very well know my opinion on the subject, I didn't intend to see it as, even though I'm not the biggest fan of his work, I'm with Scorcese on S-H movies in that they are designed for the widest mass appeal, independent of any artistic merit or quality, as geekdom will eat them with a spoon no matter what.
There are enough great, good or masterpiece movies in Cinema history I haven’t seen I’d rather watch (or rewatch) than lose my time on this tepid stuff that will never be as good as the source material. It just moves, that’s it.
Not to mention that I have never been a fan of James Gunn since I made the mistake of watching the first Guardians movie where he lost me on that very first scene of that guy moon walking in space listening to his tape player, which I found ridiculous and completely fun forced.
They will entertain us to death, indeed.
(didn’t expect this, I’m sure 😉)

I'm surprised their relationship in the movie wasn't as tense as it's depicted here. I expected Guy to be more of a foil to Superman.

Hi Mark. I wasn't expecting that to be the case, but I admit that I would've loved even a 2 minute sequence of both of these guys going at it. I'd like to think a LOT of fans would have liked that!

So nice to see the panels having the same length and width. It gives the pages a good balance that is a bit rare these days. I haven't seen the movie yet but I'll take your word for it!

Yes, it really is very pleasing to the eyes. But please don't take my word for it. See it and judge for yourself. Several friends have said they feel it rates an 8 or 8.5!

Great Superman Vs. Guy Gardner page! With the 6 panel format and the close-ups of their faces, you can really feel the tension between the two fo them. And, I have to admit, I am surprised to see you post a Tom Grummett page. You really don't have him represented very well in your collection and I feel you should add more Grummett pages in the future. :-)

No ring on the page could tear me away from my Guy
Nathan you could do, 'cause I'm superglued to my Guy
I'm sticking to my Guy like it’s stamped to go OA
Like pigs with the feathers, we stick with no inker
I'm tellin' you from the art, it can't be Tom's all art for my Guy
No Hazelwood could make green untrue to my Guy (my Guy)
Nothing you could buy would Denis sell a line of my Guy (my Guy, my Guy)
I gave my Guy my word of honor to be faithful, Brad Vancata
You best be believing Garzon be DC-ing my Guy
As a matter of opinion, I think hair's tops
My opinion is, used the bowl for the crop
As a matter of James, Zod needs neck snapped
He's my ideal, as a Snyder of Zack
No muscle-bound man could take the fans from my Guy (my Guy)
No handsome face could ever take the hate of my Guy (my Guy, my Guy)
He will now be a movie star, but when it’s Gunn’s to bein' happy, we are
There's Superman today who could take me a page from my Guy

Super cool page and very well timed on the posting haha. I really love this six panel layout and all the burst lines. Really interesting insight on the inker situation as well. Had a bit of something similar for issue 50 of the Alan Moore Swampy run, but to a much lesser exent as most pages I feel the artist could be told apart. As for the movie I actually quite enjoyed it; although not the greatest movie ever ,but I had lots of fun watching. Thought most of he characters if not all were portrayed quite well. haha Hope all is well Ruben and congrats on another fantastic piece!

Thanks, Dave! I'm usually able to distinguish between them, but the combination of the 3 possible inkers all being early in their careers (no style developed yet) and/or not really having a recognizable inking style even in later years (Carlos Garzon & Brad Vancata), just makes it a lot more difficult. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the Superman movie. As long as you had fun, that's all that matters!

You're familiar with Nathan Fillion but didn't recognize him?!? I'm actually NOT very familiar with his work yet recognizing it was him was the first thing I noticed when I saw Guy in a photo from the film! But yes, thanks, it's fun to have another nice Superman page posted.

So great to have you posting something after quite a long hiatus. And what an awesome page! It's a battle of wills that has all the power & intensity of a knockdown drag out brawl, and yeah, the six panel layout is very pleasing. I must admit that upon first viewing my focus went immediately to the third and fourth panels, and I thought that Superman and Guy Gardner were moving tall blades of grass aside to peer menacingly at each other. Haha! But that interpretation was quickly dispelled. I'm really looking forward to seeing Superman in the theater next week. I've heard similarly positive reviews to yours, and as I am much more forgiving (and usually blissfully unaware) of any flaws, I know that I'll really love it. Anyway...Congrats on a fantastic post! (So nice to be able to leave YOU a comment after all the ones you have left for me).

Thanks, Pauly, it HAS been a while. It always fascinates me how different people can be attracted the different parts of the same piece of art. Just 2 comments before yours, Troy mentioned that he really likes the first two panels the most! But ....moving tall blades of grass aside to peer menacingly at each other??? Omg, you're hilarious! Haha! I know for a fact that when you come back from seeing the film next week, you will be much more forgiving and blissfully unaware of any flaws, while adoring it and giving it an absolute minimum of 8/10!

Whoa, whoa, whoa. These guys are heroes. They should be handling themselves in a professional manner. If they really need to challenge themselves to a battle of wills then a hard boiled egg eating contest is the only way to go.

I don't know. From the brief trailer footage I saw, I think an elderly Ford has more testosterone than the character the actor they cast. Thankfully, we have comics like your page that can't f up the character.

Nicely timed post of an excellent page! You also make me feel better with my own difficulties IDing inkers on this specific issue (if not so many other pages with multiple inkers). If you are unconvinced on the inkers of Tom Grummett for a certain page, then I certainly don't feel so bad when can't either.
I feel like I could write a paper about the tightrope to be walked when writing Guy, who really went beyond the pale in this particular exchange. But I can also chalk it up to being an Elseworlds of sorts, so sometimes characters are afforded some spirals to fall down for the purposes of the 'What If' plot.
Fun annual. I await some Waverider pages when he becomes more than a time travel spaceship name on the CW Legends of Tomorrow tv series!

Thanks, Derek! As you say, it was a fun Annual, so I'm glad to own several nice pages from it. You should never feel bad about having difficulty IDing inkers. It's a bit of an art in and of itself at times.
Knowing your penchant for remembering so many of the story details from comics going way back to your youth, I have ZERO doubt you could write a paper about the tightrope to be walked when writing Guy Gardner! I, of course, don't remember anything about him being written somewhat out of character in this story, but if he was, then you're exactly right about the extra leeway writers get when it's an Elseworlds story of sorts.
I gotta say, I used to enjoy the CW shows, but Legends of Tomorrow is one that I never tried! Also, I never heard that they had used Waverider!

Thank you, Gal. Interesting that you also felt the same way about the movie as I did. I just had lunch with a friend who also felt the same as I did, but curiously enough, most of the reviews I've seen on YouTube are very polarized. I would say most of them either really love it, or else they say it's the worst thing they've ever seen. Anyway, that's why I'm happy to read comics and own some art. That's the stuff that rarely disappoints! You're right about Rodier. As I mention in the description, I recognize his pages and they are all at the beginning of the story. I'm glad you liked this Annual too, it certainly is a fun one!

Gorgeous Superman vs Guy Gardner page by Tom Grummett! Pleasing 6-panel layout with all close-ups. Interesting to see a page with all close-ups--That's not done too often. But it seems right here, since the struggle between Supes and Guy is all abou the ring. I was kind of surprised by the twist at the bottom where the ring re-forms itself around Superman's finger--That's a switch! Gorgeous work by Grummett! Great pick-up, congrats!
