DescriptionToday I want to move attention away from the beauteous Starfire (Boo! Hiss! Boo!) and put it on another beloved Titans team member, that lovable little brat, Garfield Logan, aka Changeling. Thankfully he was still using this code name at this time, as I despise the code name Beast Boy, which actually sounds like a name Cyborg would come up with to tease Gar.Speaking of the Cyborg, these 2 consecutive pages encompass a scene in which Changeling is featured breaking into Steve Dayton's building, replete with a multitude of high tech booby traps, on a mission to get his best bud Cyborg back from the Russians, who've had him in their possession ever since the Wildebeest Society fired him off to Siberia in a rocket during the classic "Titans Hunt" story (referenced here in a page 3 caption) and the Russians used their crude technology to attempt to rebuild his almost completely destroyed body. While each of these 2 pages have enough interesting content to post individually, I find the storytelling flows beautifully across the two pages and therefore figured it might be better to showcase them both together. Fans have always enjoyed pages that feature Changeling turning into one of the many creatures he regularly shape shifts into, but this brief two page sequence allows us to watch as Changeling starts off in human form as he enters the Dayton Industries building, turns into a hummingbird to evade lasers, shifts back into human form when the security system's metal coils manage to catch him, then shifts into a snake to slink away to freedom, gets caught by the security systems once more, while finally escaping again by turning himself very briefly into a wasp before finally turning back into human form, as he started the sequence in. All in all, a beautifully illustrated depiction of Changeling and the variety of creatures he can shape shift into and very akin to one of those classic Danger Room scenes in the X-Men series. For you Marvel lovers out there, especially you X-Men fans (I see you, James!), how could you look at this sequence and not see and feel the almost symbiotic relationship that the Titans had with the X-Men? How could you have seen the Titans comics on the shelf or the newsstand and not wanted to see what DC's answer to Marvel's X-Men was all about? Just as with the X-Men, at their core, the Titans went much deeper & beyond their cool costumes and powers. When it came down to it, the Titans, just like the X-Men, were about family and the interpersonal relationships that encompassed that family. Personally, I've always loved them both! Social/Sharing |

I was thinking of you the other day -as I came across some panel pages by another artist that is pretty strong artist, but not a huge name. And I asked myself - should I start collecting this artist the way that Ruben collects Grummett? Still haven't made up my mind -but from an art perspective and possibly from a financial perspective seems to make some sense.
With respect to this 2 page spread - love the solid storytelling and just the mastery of the artist to make each panel a 3d environment as he takes us along. Congrats!!

If the pages are cheap/affordable compared to most pages, I say YES, DO IT! In the current environment, so little can be had anymore without feeling guilty about how much it cost you. So if you can find a nice little niche of your own like that, assuming you really like the art a lot, I think it's a great idea. Plus it would be nice for me to see you focus at least some of your collecting attention onto storytelling pages rather than primarily "pinup images". I know that collecting the work of a single artist might destroy you psychologically though, as I'm not sure you're able to evolve your collecting methodology to allow yourself to accumulate more than just a couple of examples of a single artist. But if you can get past that, I think this could be a whole new chapter for you on your collecting journey! 🥰

I agree with everything you wrote.
Great and fluid storytelling, fun seeig Gar' morphing into various animals to escape the Danger Room and the X-Men/Titans connection.
That being said, we could all have done without Gar' the mullet ;)
(what were they thinking at DC during those years?)

Let me tell ya 'bout the birds and the bees
And the snakes in the 90's
And the connoisseur of
The Comicbook Art Love
Let me tell ya 'bout the Darkening Storyline
And Cyborg almost dies
Restore my friend from the abyss
Make a deal like this
When I look into your big green eyes
It's so Teen Titans to me
That it's time Beast Boy saved Vic Stone's life
Starting from A to Z
Let me tell ya 'bout Grummett guarantees
Pencils excites and pleases
And Vey's inks up above
And a thing called Love (Yeah!)

I do love Gar, but even in 1993 I wasn't a fan of the mullet. I'm with you 100% on Changeling vs. Beast Boy.

Now we have green camouflaged murder hornets to worry about? 2022 is off to a great start.

It's times like these that I am so happy to be able to magnify the image to see all the incredible detail, thanks to you using a really great scanner. I absolutely love this sequence of transformations. Definitely has a Danger Room feel to it as you mentioned. The action flows so nicely thanks to some amazing artistic storytelling. Bravo!!

Before I'd even read your description, I was thinking it looked a lot like a Byrne FF or X-Man page layout. And it's almost Rube Goldbergesque, imo, as he quickly changes from form to form to evade each trap. Danger Room indeed. Super cool DPS, Rubén. Congrats!

I like that you posted these 2 side by side. Some classic storytelling flow as you move panel to panel. This kind of storytelling is so much easier said than done. Congrats on yet another sweet Grummet add, Rube!

Great sequence, Ruben! I REALLY like the layout of page four here (especially panel two, with the snake / cable coils) whixh feels positively tame after the visual texture craziness on page three. :) Great technique to use the solid black panel borders around the middle panels of both pages to ground them (and the whole page(s)) amidst the non-stop action prevalent throughout. So much fun to see the tricks and techniques of the craft put to use, and your allowing us to do so over this whole sequence is a treat! Thanks, Ruben!
