DescriptionJust yesterday, I did an unboxing for this piece on my YouTube channel and boy, am I stoked to have this one in my Tom Grummett collection! When Tom broke in at DC, like most new artists getting their feet wet, he was given a few single story assignments, one at a time, to see if he could handle them, particularly the deadlines. In no particular order, he was given an Animal Man story in Secret Origins, a couple of fill-in issues on Animal Man and then a few pages in a Teen Titans Annual, which were actually inked by George Pérez. Those few pages were the very first time Tom had been inked by George and I know it was really exciting for Tom. This is just my own speculation, but I've always believed that those few pages in the Titans Annual were meant to be something of a try-out because DC editors were hoping that Tom could become the heir apparent to Pérez and take over the New Titans pencilling duties, given that they knew by that point that Pérez would be leaving the book in the near future.Lo and behold, not too long after that Annual hit the stands, news of Pérez's departure from Titans hit all the prozines and the speculation of what would happen to the Titans and who could ever replace Pérez was rampant! Soon thereafter, it was officially announced that although Pérez would indeed be leaving the New Titans, he had agreed to stay on for a few more months in order to provide story layouts and cover inks until his replacement got his feet wet and was able to take over completely on his own. That replacement ended up being Tom Grummett and he acquitted himself with much aplomb! This issue, New Titans #58, features the very first cover of Tom Grummett's 3 year run on the title and as you can clearly see, he produced a great looking layout with fabulously dynamic figure work that puts the viewer right in the middle of the action and gives you a strong sense of the movement that's going on in the scene as an out of control Cyborg uses a massive chunk of machinery and swings it in an attempt to crush his teammates with it as some of them take evasive action while others tumble or stare on in disbelief. George Pérez's inks on this cover served to tighten up the action and solidify and give weight to all the figures. It has always been one of my all-time favourite covers of the run (Hell, I even like the colored version and I rarely like comic book coloring!) and I had thought about it as soon as I entered the original art hobby. So I have very quietly been hoping that this piece would rear its beautiful head for the past 26+ years that I've been in the hobby and to see it finally appear was a thrill all by itself. But to be able to land it and add it to my collection is an even bigger and indescribable thrill! Social/Sharing |

Great piece but it looks like Cyborg may have been taken over by the dreaded fancy sock army. Viva la poutine.

Can't imagine waiting 26 years for anything (especially at my age). But this beauty is defintely worth it. Just might be the best Grummett cover I've ever seen. Congrats on landing your white whale. May you enjoy it for the next 26 years.

Such a great cover, very representative of an era, both in comics and especially for TNT.
And while there may be covers of the run I prefer, the fact that Perez inked Tom on his first cover certainly conveys a "passing of the torch" feeling to the piece.
(In fact, I would not be surprised to learn that Perez had a say at the layout stage as it really feels like one of his).
Superb and worth the Perez premium.

Always loved how compatible Grummett and Pérez were as an art team. George's inks could overwhelm a lot of other pencillers but the end result of Grummett and Pérez always looked like a true collaboration, even at this early point in Grummett's career. The only things that stand out to me as "Oh, that's a Pérez flourish," are the starfield on Troia's uniform and Jericho's mullet perm! Congrats on your newest acquisition!

Cyborg gone mad! This cover is gorgeous, and is such a great mix of their two styles. It's really cool to know the backstory, too. I was just organizing my comics recently, and remember seeing this very cover. It's a beaut! I wonder if she tripped over that head. Huge congrats!

Not hard to see at why you like this one, man, based purely on just visuals! Add in the personal nostalgia factor? Fergedaboutit! Great composition mixed with action, and the detailing is just right. Not over or underdone. We are talking about Perez here, lol. And it's like Grummett wanted to start his run out with a legit bang, and hit the ball out of the park. Big congrats, Ruben!

Oh wow, this is one kick ass cover! Great to see that Tom's style wasn't overwhelmed by George's powerful inks. Both styles really shine in this superb Titans cover. Congrats on yet another Grummett masterpiece for your collection!

I don't know, man... Are you sure this isn't a recreation...? 😜 CONGRATS, RUBÉN!! This is a fantastic example of some hardcore Grummett / Perez magic. A beautiful, bold Grummett composition with every sumptuous detail awash in the glorious inks of the one and only George Perez (I -love- the star field on Donna's tunic here, as well as the "webbed" armor textures on her gauntlets and boots... WOW!). There is NO other collection which would be a better home for it, and the fact that you have it (after looking for it for so long) is a simply -fantastic- OA tale! All my most sincere congrats on this one, Rubén!

Gorgeous cover by Grummett and Perez! What an amazing combo for this cover! Grummett's tight pencils clearly worked well with Perez's own talent for handling massive detail-filled pages. The result here is simply jaw-dropping! Fabulous pick-up!
