DescriptionA very exciting 1992 cover with Spider-Man and Ghost Rider (Danny Ketch) both racing to save a boy from being struck by an automobile!Really love the sense of motion you get from Spidey swinging on his web, Ghost Rider zooming down a wall on his bike with flames galore, the boy careening along on his bicycle (who turns out to be Danny Ketch's cousin and is probably mostly freaked out by the two heroes barreling towards him), and of course the speeding car with the shadowy figure at the wheel. It's Marvel Mayhem! Thanks for looking. Social/Sharing |

This was such a weird series. When it first came out, I didn't even know what it was exactly. It wasn't numbered like a mini series. And although it was titled Amazing Spider-man, I knew it wasn't part of the original flagship book. The first issue had a McFarlane cover, so I assumed it was Marvel just trying to cash in on Todd's popularity. It was only later that I found out these were basically anti-drug and safety PSA books for kids. I think DC did the same thing with Teen Titans. Anyway, pretty cool that you actually got one of the covers. I don't think collectors paid much attention to these as, again, they were pretty much just anti-drug commercials for kids. I do think that makes this somewhat unique from other Spidey artwork. Congrats buddy! Cool pickup.

If I recall correctly, these one-shots were only available if you mailed away for them. What I'm only just noticing now, is that it appears they were intended for the Canadian market. Not only is Jim Craig a Canadian artist, but I don't think it's just a coincidence that the kid is wearing a Toronto Blue Jays t-shirt. At any rate, a fun team up cover!

Makes sense to find this here. This is one of the pieces I gave up several years ago to pick up a different Spidey. Happy to see you got it!

Pretty neat that it has an actual Blue Jays logo front and center. The only way they would let that happen is if MLB was also involved in this somehow! Maybe they could explain the road rage happening on the cover by the MLB steroid era that was coming into fashion and the impending baseball strike causing big time roid rage and fan rage! Super high energy work by Craig and Ivy!

Are you sure the guy in the car isn't trying to save that kid from a swinging man cosplaying an arachnid and some dude with a fiery skull on a hell cycle? I mean if I was the kid, what's going to scare me the most?!

Very good point! And one that I alluded to in my description. I didn't mention it, but in the comic book, the boy actually gets hit by an intoxicated driver, which THEN brings Spidey and Ghost Rider into play. But as a cover imnage, you can't beat the characters converging on the scene all at once.

Spidey bet Ghost Rider that the car would beat the kid in a race, and in a non-traditonal character arc Spidey is seen here coming to web up the kid to secure the victory. It was a shameful period for Spidey, but hey, he was broke.
In all seriousness, this is another great cover added to to your collection. Congrats!

Great depth and yes, sense of movement, with this one! Kid does seem more scared of the heroes than anything else, little does he know. And I like the eerie touch of the car driver's face being shadowed in. Effective stuff. Nice vintage '90s piece, Paul - congrats!

Must not be a Blue Jays fan. How do you hate the Blue Jays?! Spidey will fix that in an arachnid second. (I have no idea what that means, it just sounded good to me). Fantastic 90s cover, and I love that it's got Spidey and ghost rider. Another cool one, Paul. Congrats!
