Description

While writer Chuck Austen may be mainly known/imfamous for his run on X-Men in 2000-2002, he also did a story arc on JLA at DC Comics: "Pain of the Gods". Now if that's not a title that gets you interested, I don't know what would be. The arc consists of six issues, each focusing on a Leaguer and a crucial moment of failure in their career.

Issue 101 is the opening part and focuses on Superman. A factory in Metropolis catches fire and Supes flies in to save the day. He notices a young new hero who is lifting a gas tank for his dear life and is preventing the site of turning into a fire ball. He buys Superman enough time to get the workers and first response teams out. Unfortunately, it takes him just a bit too long - and the young hero perishes.

This fourteenth page is the pivotal moment of the comic: showing the nameless hero sacrifice himself and the site exploding, while Superman can only looked shocked at what just happened. A small insert panel shows a closer look at his face, as well as some of the firemen.

Artist Ron Garney - who inked his own pencils here & is among my favorite artists, as you can see by my "Back in Black" inspired commissions - just captures the moment here perfectly. Everything in the splash guides the reader towards the center of the explosion. The small insert panel features shocked close-ups just suck you in & hammer home the moment.

On the back of the splash, there is a stamp with DC Comics info.
