Description

It's been quite a while since I posted a Carol Day.

This is the face that launched a thousand ships - Carol Day 425 from the Problem Child storyline. Jeff Singh shared it with me at a Club Lago (a Chicago-based Italian restaurant owned by fellow CAF'er GianCarlo Nardini along with his brother, Guido - they are grandsons of the man who founded this neighborhood mainstay in 1952) dinner after C2E2 a long time ago. I was mesmerized and the hook was set.

That moment led to two amazing business partners (Roger Clark & Guy Mills), the establishment of an LLC (Slingsby Bros, Ink!) and an ongoing effort to elevate the OA world's awareness and appreciation of David Wright and his signature creation, Carol Day, via art books featuring her stories.

I'm thrilled to have this piece in my collection and deeply appreciative of Jeff's help in making that happen!

Wow that's beautiful! Strips from this story arc simply command your attention. Museum quality, blue chip art. Congratulations!

It would be easy enough to say that middle close-up panel steals the show.  But I am absolutely mesmerized by that scene in the last panel.  The angle is nothing short of perfect.  And I love the sense of depth on the left side of the panel that he achieves just by the subtle variance of his hatchwork.  This is sublime.

We're twin sons of different mothers. The art in all three panels is gorgeous, but the third panel is just so hauntingly moody that you can't stop looking at it. I distinctly remember being drawn into it at the Club Lago dinner with Jeff!

Yes, this is a masterpiece. And yes, it sublime; and the last panel transcends simple language into something ethereal. Yet the next panel that features her devouring fish and chips with her mouth open really communicates the socio-gastronomics of the late 1950s England in a way that this panel simply does not. Therefore I suggest letting me look after it while I buy you a fish and chips at Lady Gregory. (Worth a shot!)

I think he was desperately reaching but If you want to get paid in fish and chips, I offer two meals and you can stay at my place while you eat them.

You're twisting my arm but here it is (drum roll please) You can have a weeks worth of fish and chips and stay at my place. Is that an electronic hand reaching over to give me a handshake , or a shake of a different kind to shake me out of my dream?

Well it ain't gonna be shake, rattle and roll. We all know what that meant in the fifties.

I've seen some strips from this arc on CAF, each one amazing in at least twelve different ways, and this is no exception.  Absolutely beautiful rendering that shows off the contrasting light and dark and all the shades in between.  Congrats!

Yeah, this is as good as it gets - the one that hooked me as well!  Gorgeous, mesmerizing, the strip that made me realize Wright was (at the time) an unknown genius.  I started collecting Carol Day strips soon thereafter.  So amazing you were able to add this to your collection.  Cherish it!!

Look at that face!  You don't want to break her heart and have her lose hope even in this cold and dark environment.

An amazing example.   It found its right home.   Congrats!   All hail Jeff Singh, the dealmaker!!  And closing the deal in a Chicago Italian restaurant?   Doesn't get better than that.   "Grab the Carol Day, leave the cannoli!"

I am glad to see it up on CAF again.  It belongs with you, it always did.  I knew it when you saw it in Chicago all those years ago and a few years before you owned even your first piece of strip art.  I had no idea about the empire you would build as a shrine to this piece but it is a piece of art well deserving of that reverance.  It had an interesting journey between our two collections and was on the wall of one of the greatest figures in the history of comic art collecting until he passed away.  I am so glad it all worked out and its little junket just adds to its importance, history and provenance.

That was the part I was going to mention to Stephen F above - the strip did not go from me to you...there was another stop along the way! The fact that it made it's way back to me is a minor miracle. Stephen F - that will be a dinner conversation topic fro you & me at SDCC 2025!

The art is gorgeous, and it is all in service to the emotional beat of the story. I don't think I've ever read Carol Day sequentially, but I'm always drawn to looking at the art when one of the strips pop up on CAF.

Good Lord! Years ago I got hooked on Carol Day and bought the series digitally. The Problem Child story was my favorite. And while I've always wanted an example they seemed like rare unicorn. You've captured the unicorn!! Congratulations!!!!!

Hard to believe it has been 17 years when I had this one.  I had 423-425 all in one frame on my wall!  I had most of the boards for "Problem Child" but there were a lot missing, and I have not seen any of those turn up.  I'm glad it has found a good home!

Thomas, you were collecting Carol Day years before I even knew she existed. Thank you for sharing so much history and information. Your graciousness sparked my early investigation and articles—the precursors to the books we're now publishing!

The best one of the lot!!! If I'm never to possess it, I'm glad it's with someone who's elevated and been proactive in reaching out to the masses, preaching the greatness of The David Wright…
