DescriptionFirst, let me apologize in advance for the pain I am about to inflict on all of you. Especially if you are the current or former owner of any of these pieces. I figured since I have a near complete set of Mitch’s old mail order catalogs, it might be “fun” (if not masochistic) to take a stroll down memory lane. But take heart. For even though most (if not all) of these posts will be almost unbearable and cringe worthy to many of you, just remember that 20-30 years from now, these will be the “good old days” to some new collector just starting out.
What is very interesting to note here is that during this 9-year span of catalogs (1984-1993), there is nothing here that is priced over (or anywhere near) $1000. Actually (with the exception of the Killing Joke page), nothing even breaks the $500 range. Absolutely incredible for pieces that could all easily be five figures (or more) today! By the way, I’ve got dozens and dozens of these. So I’ll be posting them in chunks from time to time (to prolong the torture). Social/Sharing |

Wow! So this is drawn and inked art as well? Not familiar with this format of pieces. If so, original Miller art is always a bounty to brag about! I look forward to seeing the rest if this collection and congrats on bringing it home to where it should've been. Awesome!

Just to be clear, these are clippings from 30-35 year old catalogs that I'm posting for fun. But not sure how much fun it is to see these old prices. LOL

Ohhhhhh! In gotcha. So you truly are just tormenting yourself but while bearing a great story of regret! I feel you bud! Naturally, I understand! I feel the same way about pieces I had to let go due to addictions and sometimes go look at the few that are on this site...its torture but it rekinds me never again! Hehe.

$900 seems cheap in today's money and with today's prices. In 1992 it seems paying $900 would've been pretty damn significant.

No doubt. As I've said previously, I think the first time I saw Mitch with Miller DD covers, he was charging about $300 each. That was probably about five years before this one. I imagine Dark Knight had a lot to do with the market increase for Frank's stuff. I also think these "new" prices were targetting specific collectors who were obsessed with Miller art at the time.

I almost went insane one morning trying to email Tom Horowitz when he advertised this for $900 (I believe) on the old rec.arts.comics.marketplace newsgroup (I believe) and my work's internet connection was glitchy. The guy that bought it eventually sold it for a bit over $100K 20-ish years later.

Ugh! Don't remind me Andy. Even though I wasn't a Miller fan at the time, even if I had just bought ONE of the half dozen early 180's covers that Mitch had for about $300 a pop. The #182 cover where he's hugging the headstone. The #183 where Punisher shoots DD in the stomach. Or #184, the classic Dirty Harry cover. Even if I had bought the worst one he had, I'd still have some serious trade bait today.

Ah - were you one who sold it to Michael Lehman? He's the guy who had it for the 20-ish years. Dave Mandel has a story of long term frustration over this piece too.
