DescriptionAs some of you may know, Drew Struzan’s poster for “The Goonies” was designed at Bacon & Reneric, one of the top agencies back in the day (they designed tons of iconic posters, from “Police Academy” to “Back to the Future”). Well; these are the original, hand-drawn sketches from the first batch of concepts the agency came up with. The Art Directors (Bacon and Reneric) discussed the ideas, and they were sketched by Morgan Weistling (a well known poster artist; he worked as a comp designer mostly, but he also painted the final art for some classics, like “Last Action Hero” or “Innerspace”). Cool to see what the poster could’ve been, right?Once they had these rough concepts, the agency used another artist, Richard Farrell, to make a more detailed version of their favourites. Farrell was not as prolific in film artwork, but his works include the jawdropping poster for “Transylvania 6-500”. The agency decided that the best concepts were the one with the skull cave, and the one with the stalactite. I’m leaving images of these two tighter comps on the additional pics area. Some of you may have seen Farrell’s version of the stalactites poster (it was published in a pretty obscure catalog for an exhibit the company did in the mid eighties), and probably no one had seen the cave comp until now (aside from the agency and studio crew, of course). The original artwork for these pieces is long lost. Maybe WB tossed it away (studios had that bad habit back then XD), or maybe somebody saved it and they ended on a private collection. Anyway; these are the images that the agency took to Warner Brothers’ Joel Wayne. Wayne loved both of them, and they even considered using the cave skull idea to make a teaser poster. Ultimately they picked the stalactite version, which was handed to Struzan in order to make the final poster artwork... and the rest is history. And that’s it. Happy to say I own the sketch that started it all :) Social/Sharing |
