Today, Morgan Weistling is nationally recognized as one of America’s top contemporary painters. But for almost 15 years (from the mid 80’s to the late 90’s) he was one of the most prolific and well-known artists in the entertainment industry. He was 19 when Jeff Bacon hired him and his movie illustration career begun (Bacon was the art director behind dozens of iconic posters, from “Temple of Doom” to “Back to the Future”) and Weistling immediately proved that he had an extraordinary talent for composition.
Weistling painted the final posters for films such as “Last Action Hero” or “Innerspace”, but his role on film advertising is actually way more important than that. Below the “final art surface” that everyone sees, Weistling’s work as a comp artist (designing the concepts and compositions of movie posters) was massive, and built the ideas and designs behind many iconic posters. Just an example: we’re all familiar with Drew Struzan’s poster for “The Goonies”… Well, Weistling did the first composition work for that one. Before the final artwork was produced (no matter if it was painted or photo work) Weistling was one of the best artists you could hire to sketch concepts and explore creative options.
Most of the times the poster design and concept work of these artists goes unnoticed, while everyone looks at the signature on the final artwork. Guys like Weistling, Mike Hobson or Dave Christensen, who did only a few final artworks… but really shined on those early stages of the process nobody sees. Well, at least you can see some of these wonderful artworks here, and catch a glimpse of the poster-making creative process we rarely get to know of. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
