DescriptionINFERNO! Here's a jaw-dropping B&W illustration commemorating the 1989 Marvel "Inferno" crossover event. It's a massive 17" x 22" drawing (On two 11" x 17" boards), from the pen of artist Philip Tan. The art was used for a poster print included in the "Marvel Made Paragon Collection: Chris Claremont Premiere Bundle." The piece features a host of Marvel characters from the crossover, including the demon N'astirh, Madelyn Pryor/The Goblin Queen, Mister Sinister and Darkchylde. Plus there's X-Factor and the X-Men, Magik and the New Mutants, the X-Terminators, the Marauders, Power Pack, Excalibur, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Captain America, the Fantastic Four, the demon S'ym, the list goes on and on. Tan poured tons of energy and gallons of ink into this mammoth work of art, populating it with so many cameos that I still find new ones every time I look at it.The art itself is exquisitely detailed. A combination of inks, ink wash, and white paint, the entire board is covered with intricate crosshatching, thick black inks and a explosion of ink washes. Lots to love here: Check out the way the New Mutants’ faces are reflected in Magik’s sword. And notice how the white glow behind the Goblin Queen’s head creates a kind of crown. I think the Demon N’astirh (Upper left corner) is particularly nasty-looking and Mr. Sinister (Upper right) never looked more sinister. And don't miss the image of Wolverine (Center) leaping out, arms crossed, claws extended and ready to slash. Tan uses a myriad of crosshatching techniques and ink washes here to give every character dimension and depth. IMHO, it's a dazzling tribute to a memorable Marvel crossover event. Social/Sharing |

I love seeing a Philip Tan piece in your amazing colection. To me he is such a rising star, and whatever he draws is just phenomenal. And leave it to you to get one of the best possible examples. Look at all those characters, and all that beautiful detail you can totally get lost in! It's the kind of piece you frame, hang up on your wall, and spend part of each day just gazing at it. Another amazing acquisition, Bill, congrats!!

Wow! So many characters, such great detail, there is simply so much to like about this one. I think my favorite feature might be the faces reflected in the blade of the sword though. Reflections as a means to pack in even more awesomeness is always a fun device and its employed well here. Congrats!

Been a fan of Philip's since I started noticing his Uncanny X-Men covers back in 2003. I knew he had some serious skills, but this is on another level. Must be a sight to behold in person. Makes me proud to be Filipino (even if I can't draw a lick). Congrats Bill.

Very impresive (if quite busy) piece. It seems to me that Tan made sure he paid attention to his artistic Filipino heritage on that one.

Is Masterpiece too strong a word to discribe this? I think not.

I know this will surprise anyone readin this, but my favourite part of this piece is how he illustrated the character in the top left corner, whose name I believe was N'Astirh, or something like that. Just beautifully lighted and rendered. That aside, the entire piece as a whole is incredibly impressive and I can only imagine how much more impressive it looks in person, given the size it was drawn at!

Incredible artistic tour de force. And a feast for the eyes, with so many outstanding details that only appear after repeated viewings. That is one piece that grabs you with power, but never lets you go. Just like the Inferno arc, by the way!

I'll be honest: I had stopped reading the X-titles by this point in favor of other material. However, this piece makes me want to read this storyline almost four decades after it was published. Tan's work looks a bit more refined and polished here than it typically does and that level of attention and detail befits what looks like an epic part of X-lore.

Many adjectives are needed to be fair with this SUPER MEGA MASSIVE piece of ART! I find it magnetic. I could spend hours looking for details! It is so difficult and probably unfair to choose juat one detail or character! But... if I have to choose one I definetely vote for the Wolverine amongst them all. Hats off my friend.

Philip Tan's recent work has all been very impressive in terms of linework and detail, and this is taking it to another level (or three). Really dig all the lighting/rendering he did here against the black background (especially in the bottom third), and I'm sure it looks phenomenal in person. Congrats!

Outstanding image, wow! So many characters, exquisitely illustrated, and an unreal composition. Plus Inferno is one of my top 3 favorite X-Men arcs of all time...what a way to bring the casssic story to today. Love how you have those 3 bads in the corners, and what a great face on Illyana...and the reflections in her Souldsword is a great touch. Big congrats, Bill!

Buddy, it's been a loooooong minute. Since I've had the luxury of cruising through your gallery and with help of the app. I now get to follow / watch people and you were first. This is an amazing piece amongst many amazing pieces. It's almost unfair and it probably couldn't have happened to a cooler person. Congrats
