DescriptionOne of my favorite pieces in my collection, and I'm not sure exactly what it is! Charles Payne was one of the pioneers of comics strip art. His strip "Coon Hollow Folks" began in 1903, and his most popular series, "S'Matter Pop" ran from 1910-1940. I love this example of his work, its style and whimsy... but what is it? There's no title or syndicate label, it's dated in pencil "May 24 1946". Payne apparently had a later strip called "Desperate Ambrose," perhaps based on a "S'Matter Pop" character, but I can find little information on it. An example sold by Heritage looks somewhat similar to this, but not really. In a reminisce of Payne, I found a reference to another strip: "a hillbilly strip filled with charm and character and rural accents (title forgotten) that would have become a classic," which sounds like this. I think perhaps this was a try-out for a strip never published (the lack of syndicate label supports that idea). Anyway, I'm very glad to have it. Does anyone have any idea about what this strip is?Social/Sharing |
