DescriptionDecember 1972, The Mighty Thor 206 Cover, John Buscema pencils/inks, "Rebirth", Thor vs: The Absorbing Man (Crusher Creel)This is my #2 absolute GRAIL Cover that I have been looking for since 2004. I never saw it anywhere or heard of its whereabouts till now. Well, it showed up this month in the January 2021 Heritage auction. I had to wait over a month to bid on it, but the day finally came and I was able to bring it home. This classic story line, written by Gerry Conway, reintroduces The Absorbing Man back into Marvel continuity from his last appearance two years earlier in Incredible Hulk #125 (1970). This is the zenith of collecting comic art. Artistic perfection to go along with incredible nostalgia. I read this comic off the newsstand the third month after I started reading comics in 1972. The image is so vividly imprinted in my mind, it is totally unforgettable. I am so happy beyond description to be able to put this up on my wall and enjoy it till my last days. Social/Sharing |

Thor is one of my top three titles - of any era - and this cover is burned in my brain because of the original and the Essentials paperback which I've read about a dozen times. Absorbing Man is also not only one of the best villains but one of my favorite characters. One of the best Thor covers in his nearly 60 year existence. Bravo!

What a great, powerful cover image, Nick! The Absorbing Man has to be one of the most successful oddball villains ever, and he rarely (if ever) seemed to posses more intimidating power than he did in this piece. Fantastic vintage Thor, hammer ready to swing, kinetic energy ready to burst forth. Tremendous piece and a wonderful addition to your collection.

Outstanding! Big John's inks take this to the next level, as well. This is what I like to see, and what our hobby is all about. Certain art belongs in certain collections, and it's great when a piece like this finds its forever home... big congrats, Nick! It's true that every time a comic art collector acquires a long sought grail, you hear a bell, and an angel gets her wings.

This was one of the main highlights in that auction, in my opinion--LOVE seeing Big John ink himself, and rare to see it with his superhero work (as opposed to Conan). This is gorgeous--and an awesome showdown with a key villain, to boot. Congrats!

Big John once said he always draws Thor as the most handsome man in the Marvel universe. He did that while somehow maitaining his strength and warrior personna. This cover does all of that and more! A true masterpiece! Congrats my great friend on this grail!!!!
