Last November, I took the bullet train from my home on the western coast of Honshu to Tokyo for the 3rd Annual International Manga Festival, but I got sick the morning of the event and did not get to go. To tide me over while he went to the show, my buddy bought a few magazines and manga for me to read, including Brutus Magazine, while I recovered. Brutus is a pop culture magazine that is mainly geared toward a young-adult male audience and that issue had several major stories about the wildly popular, "Attack on Titan" (進撃の巨人/Shingeki no Kyojin), a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. The series spawned an anime TV series and movie and a bunch of young adult novels amongst many other things.

Inside the magazine, however, was something you don't normally see in a Japanese magazine, an 8-page American comic book in English, albeit printed for the Japananese format which is read from right to left (there was a translation page that followed at the end) that was plotted by Isayama-san himself, with dialogue by C.B. Cebulski (whom I met when he attended the first two Manga Festivals) and art by Gerardo Sandoval. While American comic books are a niche market in Japan, movies featuring American comic book characters are quite popular and, Isayama-san is a fan.

The story (well, it's more like a teaser really), follows Spider-Man, SHIELD and the Avengers as the human-eating giants appear out of nowhere to attack New York. Spider-Man leads things off as he takes on two smaller giants solo, followed (ala the Avengers movie) by a sequence where Cap, Black Widow and Hawkeye take on several more as a team and, finally a third sequence with Iron Man and Hulk smashing two more giants individually. On the final page, the Avengers (minus Spidey) have all gathered together bracing for an attack by the "colossal titan" pictured walking past the Statue of Liberty, which is miniscule in comparison to the monster. Also, in the very last panel to add a little spice (not to mention promotion for the most recent Marvel movie), The Space Avengers, er, I mean, the Guardians of the Galaxy show up to lend a hand for the ongoing fight. (The full sequence/story can be found online). It was, all-in-all, a quick but rather enjoyable read.

Anyway, after I came back home, I found Gerardo had a gallery on CAF where he had posted the OA to the crossover. Afterwards, I checked out his Facebook page and congratulated him for getting his story published in Japan. Gerardo wrote that he would love to visit Japan and the manga festival and is a huge manga and anime fan. Sometime later, he posted several fully rendered drawings of Japanese characters, including one of the "Colossal Titan" and I decided that I could not turn down the chance to acquire it.

So, while getting sick at the end of 2014 was a sucky way to end the year, being able to acquire a nice "Titans" piece from Gerardo has made the start of 2015 a bit more pleasant. And who knows, maybe Gerardo'll be able to make it over for the 2015 festival (I told him that my friends and I would help take care of him if he did) and I'll get the chance to meet him in person (and that he'll get the chance to meet all the Japanese fans he made thanks to the Brutus story).

Cool. I am reading Attack of the Titans. I have heard great things about the anime but I generally prefer manga over anime. Neat image.
