DescriptionShinji Nishikawa, monster designer for the Godzilla series, attended an art mini-con before the 2016 Tokyo International Manga Festival and I managed to get on his commission list. When discussing my request, I asked him what his favorite "kaiju" was and he surprised me by saying it was Biollante.Biollante was a genetically modified plant that merged with some of Godzilla's cells and gradually morphed into a moster powerful enough to face off against the Big G itself. It was the 17th film in the Godzilla franchise and the second film in the Heisei series. It came out in 1989, the year before I first moved to Japan, so I missed seeing it in the theater, but I soon found it in a rental shop. It was the first Godzilla movie I watched in Japanese and, overall, it was a pretty good movie with fine FX and some fresh ideas. So, when I say I was surprised, it's not because I thought it was a bad choice, Biollante's just not the first kaiju that springs to mind (probably because of my nostalgic affinity for the Showa era movies). Despite that, there is no question that Biollante, with its thorny rows of teeth and numerous vine-like extremities that it used to move and fight, was a really cool design. And since I now knew it was Nishikawa-san's favorite, it made my choice an easy one. I think mine was one of the last Nishikawa-san got around to drawing, and, when he saw me coming over to pick it up, he actually had a big grin on his face. I knew then that it was going to be special. It was done in pen and ink on a "shikishi" (Japanese art board) and when he held it up and saw me react to it, his grin got even bigger. Even the people assisting him had a look on their face that said, "Yeah, this one is good." Social/Sharing |

Had to look up Biollante. This has some great detail. Nice to see a brush drawing.
