DescriptionLately I've been blown away by the work of artist/writer Sean Murphy. I loved his Batman: White Knight and its sequel, Batman: Curse of the White Knight. I thought his stories of Batman and Jack Napier/Joker were incredibly compelling. I love the look of the series too--Sean’s use of dry brush is simply gorgeous. He draws both figures and backgrounds with equal facility. And his ability to balance multiple elements on a single page is impressive. So I was excited to pick up this cover to Batman: Curse of the White Knight #1. I love the fierce determination of Batman here, striding forward with his cape billowing behind him. Notice how the dark cape morphs into the skyline of Gotham--It's like Batman's carrying the whole weight of Gotham on his shoulders. Towering over Gotham is a laughing Joker--Never a good sign. Above it all looms the mask of Azrael. It's a fantastic combination of powerful symbolism, masterful composition and fabulous brushwork. I'm delighted to add it to my collection.Social/Sharing |

Not a DC guy but have always been struck by SGM's work. This is a wonderful example. After his CAF interview, I can appreciate him as an artist even more!

I'll admit that I haven't fully jumped on the SGM bandwagon. But I do appreciate how his rendering looks loose and instinctive although I know he's very conscious about his design work.

This is tremendous Bill!!! Congrats on this incredible addtion. And I 100% agree with you. Sean is on fire with this entire series – as a writer, penciler and, especially, as an inker.

Breathtaking cover!! But then, my heart always beats a bit faster when I am about to look at one of your new posts. I also love how Batman's cape morphs into the skyline of Gotham, and over to the left, the Joker emerges from the buildings as if he is born from all the darkness and insanity of the city. Like you say, it's powerful symbolism, masterful composition and fabulous brushwork all rolled into one stunning cover. Congrats!!

It's hard to get the Joker off of your back. He's persistent! Man, I LOVE how he drew that scene on Batman's cape. Brilliant choice, and all that great detail. I got my first SGM recently, and was blown away by his method, too. Gorgeous cover. Big congrats!

An example representitive of Murphy's entire universe he created as well as for the impressive follow up to the original series. In many ways i liked Curse of The White Knight even more than White Knight (prob cause I enjoy Azrael stories too). Tremendous piece, congrats Bill !

Incredible cover, Bill! Superb composition that allows your eye to jump around to each distinct element and nothing upstages anything else. Lots of, "Oooh - THAT'S my favorite thing about this... No, wait - THIS is my favorite thing about this... No..." is going on in my head as I ponder this beauty. :) Love the gorgeous cityscape, and how the Joker towers over it... and the awesome Batman... and the overall design (with how the logo fits in...). Superlative work, Bill - a magnificent add to your collection! Sincere congrats!

Awesome! Loving that trademark scratchy line work, and graphically, so cool how the imagery up top is in Batman's cape. All characters look great, but just as nice is that cityscape! Winning image all around. Congrats, Bill!
