Description

Cover dated December 1983.

I walked onto the floor at Heroes Con this past Saturday firm in my stance that I wasn’t going to spend money on any artwork. That position went out the window the moment I set eyes on this. The second I saw it, I was taken back to when I first read this book in 1986. It was my third “What If?” back issue, and I was blown away by it as a kid. This particular page was imprinted onto my mind for some reason (a lot easier in those days when I could fit every comic I owned into a single box kept under my bed). Maybe it was just the sweetness of the image of a young Ben, Sue and Reed by Ron Frenz and THE Fantastic Four inker, Joe Sinnott, that left an impression, but upon seeing the original page decades later, I knew I had to have it. So here it is.

Congratulations on this page!  My budget went out the window when I was at HeroesCon.  No regrets, though.

Great nostalgic memory to go with a really beautiful page.  Especially enjoy the thought of recalling 1 box of comics under the bed.  I am thinking it was the right call at this con.

Back in the day when comic books were fun to read.  Great page!

Which way is Sue goin'?
Which side will Sue be on?
Will Sue’s fans go watch while

All the seeds of death are sown?
Will you stand with those who say
Let Frenz will be done?

One fan of the Marvel
One handsome Franklin
What If’s in the title
Tragedy’s begun

Which page are you buying?
From your memory
Do you say what's wrong for Grimm

Is not wrong for Reed?
Inks got Joe’s sweet, righteousness
But you can choose the inker’s hand

Uatu loves the baby
Then you sacrifice the man
You say, Sue loves her baby
A sad lullaby again

If Marvel ever published "What If Jim Croce Had Lived?", it would no doubt end with Croce writing a song that prompts the Celestials to destroy Earth.  Because that's how "What If?" usually rolled.

The old had to have it moment. Why not? Nothing wrong with scratching the urge. Its a nice page!

Congrats, man! A fun splash either way, but way more meaningful under your circumstances. So cool that it's early Ron Frenz, too, several years before he and Joltin' Joe teamed up again for their now classic Thor run!

Great looking page, both in terms of composition and inking, not to mention the nostalgia factor!

Wow - congrats, Michael!  Beautiful Frenz/Sinnott work whose layout and execution feel almost more like a romance comic, and which also perfectly encapsulates that classic story formula: boy pledges no new art from con, boy goes to con, con woos boy, boy gets art... :) It's all there in the clean lines and entwined figures, amirite? And someday, someone should go through all the Ben Grimm college football jersey-wearing flashback stories to compile a list of how many different numbers he wore during his illustrious career.  Might be fun. :)  Congrats on the fantastic pick up (with deep and rich ties to your own Secret Origin!), Michael!  Awesome score!

So I remembered that the second issue of the Thing's 1983 ongoing series contained flashbacks to his college days.  I took a look at it and lo and behold, he was number 77 in it!  So they kept the number consistent for at least two comics.

Your comparison to a romance comic page is also spot on!

I can see how a gem like this could instantly "dissolve your resolve" to not buy any art.  It really is a nice, sweet image, and wow those Sinnott inks!  Congrats!

I thought I had commented on this one - I just love Frenz art from this era and this page is a top shelf example of his work. Major congrats!

I've had that same certainty that I wasn't going to spend anything a a convention and then....Ooops! I guess I was wrong. Congratulations on picking up a great splash page anyway!

Funny how this stuff can make your plans go RIGHT out the window, huh?!  Not hard to see why with this one, man.  Dynamic duo of Frenz/Sinnott doign their thing, and I agree, it's a heartening page.  And from only your third issue of What If?  Nostalgia runs deep :)  Congrats, Michael!
