Q: | Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why? |
A: | Power Pack #17, page 14 by June Brigman and Bob Wiacek is one of my favorites for purely nostalgic reasons. I can still remember buying that issue off of the newsstand as a pretty young kid, and I read it so many times that it started to physically fall apart. Page 14 in particular always stood out in my mind because I didn’t understand why Energizer’s face appeared to be missing in the second panel. Looking at the original page not only brings back great memories, it also confirms that Energizer’s missing face wasn’t a printing error. That being said, I still don’t know why her face is missing in that panel. |
Q: | Please tell us a little about yourself. |
A: | I have a wife and three kids. I work crazy long hours. I find that looking at comic book artwork helps to reduce my stress. |
Q: | How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start? |
A: | I started colleting comic books in 1984 not long after I learned how to read. Marvel’s “Star Wars” was the gateway drug, and I spent the next thirty years growing my collection. By 2014, after accumulating some 35,000 comic books, I made the move to digital since storing so many physical books is more trouble than it’s worth (at least to me). However, giving up on tangible comic books left a void, and original comic book art entered into my life to fill that void. I had bought my first comic book page off of eBay around 1997 (a Kieron Dwyer Classic X-Men page), but I was too stupid at the time to appreciate it. Seventeen years later, I finally came to my senses and jumped headfirst into the original art realm. It’s been a blast. |
Q: | How do you display/store your collection at home? |
A: | I finally started framing pieces in October 2021, and I now have four pieces hanging in my home office with two more framed and waiting to be put on the wall. The rest are in portfolios. |
Q: | What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions? |
A: | Back around 2003/04, there was a series from AiT/PlanetLar called Scurvy Dogs by Andrew Boyd and Ryan Yount. It was a hysterically funny book about pirates out-of-place in the modern world. I would like to own a page from that series, but I’ve never seen original art from it anywhere. I would also love to own a decent Greg Capullo “Quasar” page. A Jack Kirby published panel page featuring Dr. Doom would also be nice. |
