Comic Art Archive: Futurians by Dave Cockrum
Issue: 1   Page: cover

Description

I can't tell you how excited I was when I won this auction! The Futurians was Dave's creator owned series which unfortunately only lasted for a few issues due to publisher/industry problems at that time.

The art was originally drawn on a 11" x 17" board and was used as the cover to Amazing Heroes #74. Dave then taped this to a larger bainbridge board and added additional art. The revised version was used as a promo poster as well as the cover to issue #1.

I believe this was also published as an ad in the 1985 Voltron series (Modern Comics), which is why it says Voltron AD at the top.

As you can see in the additional scans, the art came with an overlay for the ad as well as a promo poster with some color guide updates on it (presumably made by Paty Cockrum for the cover to #1). It also came with the color guide to the issue #2 cover, which I'll be posting separately.

WHAT?!?!WOW, what a classic! Okay, I know most wouldn't go as far as calling it that, but a a massive X-Men fan back then, if you loved Cockrum's art on the title as I did, seeing a great costume/character designer like Cockrum invent his own super group and take it to an independent was a huge thrill! I now only wish, given that the property didn't ultimately go anywhere, that they had been sold to Marvel, because visually speaking, they could've been the next X-Men in terms of popularity and it would've been so fun to see them interact within the Marvel Universe against or alongside the Avenger, the aforementioned X-Men, or anyone else really. What an absolute thrill to see this, Ted, and I'm only wishing you hadn't held out all these years!

I agree, I would have LOVED to see this super group become a sensation like the X-Men or the Avengers. But anyway, I'm just a huge fan of multi-character covers like this, so congrats on owning such a cool piece!

That's hilarious! I never noticed that before. I'm sure Dave did that intentionally as a joke.
