Description

One of the first comics I ever read, picked up at a used bookstore in a pack of other back issue comics in 1979 when I was 10 years old. I'd seen Hawkman & Hawkgirl on the Superfriends and had read a Brave & the Bold #43 reprint in the DC Blue Ribbon Digest Secret Origins of Superheroes - for some reason the Hawks became my immediate and long-lasting favorites.

I had barely any idea what was going on in the story, but I was captivated - introduced to Adam Strange, Rann, etc. The science fiction elements greatly appealed to me (not long after seeing Star Wars in the theater & growing up with Star Trek re-runs). I read and re-read the story so many times that the comic came apart and I had to staple it back together. (It wasn't until college that I finally got to read the two issues that preceded this one, given the dearth of comic book shops in my home town in WV.)

I think this cover is unusual for the character of Katar Hol because he's actually using a ray gun - since the action took place in space/Thanagar, the self-imposed proscription against using advanced weaponry did not apply (though Hawkman found plenty of opportunities for swinging a mace in the story!).

From Will Gabri-el's site: "This cover, which comes from the Joe Kubert Estate, was rendered in ink over graphite on standard size Bristol board which was then affixed to a regular sheet of DC/Sparta cover stock Bristol board."

There's some use of white out, paste up logo, title, etc. (presumably "original" given that it came from the Kubert estate).

Hard to express the thrill of just holding the art that touches like electricity on my childhood memories.

Beautiful Hawkman page by the incredible Joe Kubert. I love the detail Kubert put into this cover. The elaborate crosshatching he used on Hawkman and Hawkgirl is gorgeous.

A Hawkman Kubert cover is hard to beat. Also, I love all the exclamatory hype at the bottom and how the "Adventures on Other Worlds" logo was worked into it. Cheers!

Never expected to own a piece of Kubert art, much less a cover to such a pivotal comic for me.

Completely agree on the words - they just scream 1970's to me!
