Description

Watching last night’s great Live Chat & Art Sale that Bill Cox did with Mike and Laura Allred inspired me to post this beauty that I picked up last year from Mike’s art rep, Simon Miller at gotsuperpowers.com. This cover combines two hallmarks of my childhood – Adam West’s Batman and Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman.

The 1966 “Batman” television show is something that I revisit every decade or so, and each time I find something new to appreciate about it. When I first saw it in syndicated reruns as a young kid, I loved the action and the colorful characters. As a teenager, I enjoyed the campy aspects that went over my head the first time (not to mention developing a new admiration for Julie Newmar for obvious reasons). As an adult, I got a big kick out of the cameos of various celebrities while also coming to appreciate the wonderful performances of the main cast of heroes and villains. And when I watched the show again a couple of years ago with my young kids, I was able to view it through their eyes as if I was seeing it as a kid again for the first time.

As for the “Wonder Woman” TV series, I would watch reruns of it as a kid on the weekends on channel 5 here in NY. Lynda Carter was easily a very early crush of mine, and remains one to this day.

Allred captured both characters perfectly here. This was first used as the cover for the fifth and sixth chapters of the initial digital releases for the series, and was then used again on the third issue of the hard copy printing of the series.

I like that he did the facial split by having them ear to ear, rather than the two halves with a line down the middle.  Great job on the Adam West and Linda Carter likenesses as well.

Great looking cover !!  I have very fond memories of both shows for the some of the same reasons you mentioned.  Both shows symbolized what is best about those characters.

Sleek and definitely eye-catching. Allred's style really shines on classic subjects like this and his inks are just masterful!

Having grown up watching both of these shows, this is a great homage to that era. Of course, the Batman show hs been unwatchable for me since I entered my teens, but I still watch the Wonder Woman series to this day as I have it all on DVD. Sadly, the 3rd season is pretty excruciating to get through and even the 2nd season was a noticeable drop off from the first season, but I can still watch the first two seasons and enjoy them. I watched them together with my daughter when she was younger and she enjoyed them too. Congrats on the great piece, which by the way, would really look great in a custom frame on your wall!

Yeah, the third season of Wonder Woman was not great.  I'm not sure if anyone out there is willing to strongly defend it.  As for the framing suggestion, I showed this to my wife as a piece to possibly hang in the hallway (instead of my office) since she also grew up watching Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman, so maybe it will happen.

That is one beautiful cover.  I really enjoyed your description too.  Ah, Lynda Carter.  Big crush for me too.  I hope this piece does end up framed and hanging in your hallway.

Through the mirror Allred's mind
Line after line
I see reflections of tube tv

Reflections of
The way shows used to be
Reflections of
The reruns shown to me

Oh, we're not alone now
HBO streams these
Max in a world
That's now comic art reality

Happiness you took to me
And all that Allred shown
With team up fantasies

Through the cover of Mike's mind
Through all these years that they're trying
Reflects nostalgia for retro
'Cause although they're gone
I keep holding on
To those same Bat times
Oh, girl when Wonder's mine

It's a tragedy that Lamont Dozier and William Dozier couldn't settle their interfamily rivalry long enough to have the Holland-Dozier-Holland team write some songs for the Batman TV show.  This offers a glimpse of what might have been.

The ultimate in nostalgic imagery, perfectly executed by Allred.

Allred is obviously perfect for the Batman 66 property.

Thanks.  There's an almost photographic quality to it while still being distinctly Allred.  I'm in awe of his talent.

Beautiful piece, Michael!  Mike does an amazing job on likenesses in general, but when those also tie in to "retro" figures, or pop-art characters/shows he (obviously) also loved or influenced him when he was young, the results are magic, pure and simple, 100% of the time.  Could there have _ever_ been a better choice for a cover artist on the Batman '66 series?  I say thee nay...

Nostalgia is such a driving force in comics and comic art, but both of these  TV series (Batman and Wonder Woman) are so multi-generational (and growing) that this great piece acts as both a thoroughly modern masterpiece and a nostalgia-infused hug to anyone who has ever seen either show.  Both of those approaches fall squarely into Mike Allred's awesome wheelhouse, and combining them here is a thrill to behold.  (I REALLY love the incredible renderings of both heroes' eyes, and the shading around Batman's mask.). Most sincere congrats, Michael!

I agree with your excellent insights on all counts, Jason.  Allred is the perfect artist for anything Batman '66-related.

The more I see Allred the more I want to get my own piece!  Clearly the TV renditions of both characters here but also clearly Mike's style.  Congrats!

Fantastic split-screen effect of Catwoman and Wonder Woman. Like Eric DLS, I like the fact that they aren't divided down the middle and instead are drawn side-by-side--It's a nice change. Beautifully executed by Mr. Mike Allred! Congrats!
