DescriptionHere’s the 3rd of 4 Black Panther (BP) posts to start out the year by creators who have had significant runs on the character. Started out with ‘70s John Buscema and Billy Graham and now jump to the early 2000s with Sal Velluto! I should say Sal Velluto AND inker Bob Almond, as they worked together on their entire run, which I believe is the longest running art team on BP, illustrating half of writer Christopher Priest’s renowned run. Velluto did 30 issues over a 3 year period, as well as the covers to those books, save one. So, my BP collection was incomplete without a nice example from it!Also didn’t have a piece featuring M’Baku, the Man-Ape, so 2 birds killed here! Just an awesome splash with BP facing off against one of his main foes! Great poses and lots of nice detail, from BP’s vibranium soles to M’Baku’s chest plate and gorilla fur. Also cool that you’ve got sparks flying from BP’s claw strike! It was during the late ‘90s/early 2000s where coloring technology went up a huge notch and you can see some of that on the published page (see additional image), including that sheen in BP’s glove and belt ornaments. Gotta also dig how “The Might of the Man-Ape!” is lettered big and bold! Alright, another big creator in BP’s history checked off! I’m getting there and thanks, all, for staying around to check out the progress! Social/Sharing |

This could easily be a cover. Love the composition, the detail, and the inking. Velluto and Almond made a great team.

Agree with you all around, John. This tandem really did their thing on their BP run - I HAD to get a piece! Thanks for the comments, all!

Velluto and Almond are my favorite Black Panther art team and this splash page is a great example of why. They were perfect on this book. And I love how Priest wrote Man-Ape. Congrats on acquiring this!

Velluto/Almond were a perfect fit for Priest, being able to adapt to really different stories in really different settings from arc to arc. And you're right about Man-Ape! Another awesome looking arc was Secret Invasion from BP Vol. 4. Only 3 issues (39-41) but Jefte Palo killed it and it's become one of my favorite Panther stories as a result. Jason Aaron was writer. I think Palo drew it digitally as I haven't seen any art out there but if I'm wrong, and if any of you fellow characters see any other Palo Panther artwork out there, let ME know! Thanks for the nice comment!

Oh I love Jefte's art! He also drew an awesome Taskmaster series that is worth seeking out. But I don't think I've seen any original art from him floating around anywhere.

Not sure if just me but I always found Man-Ape’s costume terrifying. Dude is wearing a sacred white gorilla. Yep, nightmare material right there.

I'd have to agree, on BOTH points, T Shen ;) I've had a lot of fun putting the BP collection together and am really happy with it...not that I'm done! But definitely a lot closer. OK, not sure I'll ever be "done", we'll just say "more complete" :) Seriously, though, thanks for the comment - always nice to see fellow collectors taking notice!

One of the beauties (and curses) of this hobby, is I fear, some collections will ever be "done". Collector's mentality if you will?

Correct about Sal doing 30 issues (#13-49)...I did 29 issues over him as I need a break for issue 44. He (or we) did all those covers except for #24 (by CrissCross, an inventory cover), 38-40 (Steve Uy), 46-47 (Jorge Lucas) and 48 (Shin Nagasawa). This was because that's when Marvel was sterring their cover images into iconic pose covers instead of teasers about what might be in the interior story. THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR KIND WORDS ABOUT SAL & MYSELF AND OUR PANTHER WORK! It was the greatest professional time of my career because of the brilliant material I was collaborating on and all of the conteributions my partners allowed of me beyond the inking side of things. Oh, wow, awesome to see you here and commenting on this piece, Bob! So cool to know that working on BP was your best time professionally, and I gotta say, it showed in the work. You and the team were firing on all cylinders and I’m glad to know that a lot more people are going back and reading those stories due to the exposure the movie brought to the character. It’s funny about Marvel’s change regarding covers - I’m as big a fan of pinup-y images as any BUT I’ve always been partial to covers tying to the actual interior story.
Well, thanks again for the comment, and thanks for all the work that fueled my enjoyment as a youngster!

Man... There are covers that should have been pin-ups, and splash pages that would have worked better as covers... and then there's THIS thing. Holy moley. Honestly, it might be too good for a cover - just go straight to a door-sized poster!
I LOVE the inking on M'Baku here - the stance, the feathered effect on the hair, everything, just perfect - and T'Challa always seems to me most at home when he's launching himself into the jaws of danger for his people or country. Incredible image.
I really love this piece and am so glad you have it to display here in your incredible gallery, for us all to enjoy.

How did I ever miss this one? SPECTACULAR! I never read this series but I always loved looking at the art from it and even bought and sold several covers from the run over the years. Great to see it!
