DescriptionLet’s keep it rolling with more BP. Here, Azzuri, T’Challa’s grandfather and the Black Panther during WW2, straight laying things out a to defeated Baron von Strucker. Well, right after BP and Cap beat up an armored Red Skull so bad, he throws up :)Picked this up from Denys via one of Bill’s claim shows. Was cool to hear him talk about the book, as well as heaping praise on the late great Tom Palmer, who inked this page. I have Palmer inked pieces by pencillers Colan, Weeks, and now Cowan. His contributions are a clear on all. Here, love the more scratchy line work, and what really pushed me to get this was that bottom row. No nonsense dialogue from Azzuri, and I love the head shot in the final panel. Got a feline bent to it. And if you haven’t read this 4-issue mini, I suggest you get to it! I have an ‘80s non-published BP pin-up by Cowan, as well as a nice published Deathlok page, but getting a published BP example was on the list – mission accomplished. Thanks, Denys and Bill! Do you remember
The 21st night of September?
Cowan changin' the mind of Black Panther
While drawin' the Cap away
Tom Palmer's inkin'
Azzuri has the soul he's bringin'
As they danced in the lines, remember
How the scratch inked right that way, oh, yeah
Hey, hey, hey
Ba-dee-ya, say, do you remember?
Ba-dee-ya, postin' in September
Ba-dee-ya, Denys Cowan claimy page
Ba-du-da, ba-du-da, ba-du-da, ba-du
Ba-du-da, ba-du, ba-du-da, ba-du
Ba-du-da, ba-du, ba-du-da

Lol, same, N of the T! I remember thinking "ew" while simultaneously cracking up. Then you immediately get the Skull tossing cookies. I didn't note in my description, but that fun memorable moment from initial reading was indeed another draw to picking up the page! Thanks!

Black Bpanther. If he suddenly appears, you probably have 10 seconds to say your prayers. Lovely art work on this one.

That was a fun show with Denys. Lots of great stories -- and definitely lots of great art like this page. Wow -- WW2 Black Panther, so cool -- and Cap too! Yeah, those bottom three panels are amazing. Tom Palmer worked with so many great artists like Denys, and graced so many pages with his masterful inks. Terrific pick-up!

If he would have invaded and killed all the nazis anyway, I don't think anyone would mind.

Love the way Cowan visualizes Black Panther's face under his cowl--very cool and expressive.

Absolutely! In a mask that fully covers the face, right? Check out the difference in expression from panels 4 to 6. Great stuff, no doubt accentuated by Palmer's inks. Thanks, Jeremy!

Some intense posturing and even a puke panel, not something you often see in these pages. Nice find!

This is an incredible piece by Cowan! The somber intensity of the Panther is lost in the colored production. We may have to meet up soon so I can see this face to page. Congrats!

Glad you dig it, man! I actually like the way they colored this book. They went with more of an extreme palette, i.e., not as many gradients. I think maybe to match the time the book was set it in. BUT I did notice, like you did, that due to that you can lose some of the intricacy of the OA. Good thing we can get out hands on said OA at times :) And yes! We're do for a meetup soon!

Cowan's design for the Panther here is completely original. The six panel layout works really well here and there is something to like in every panel. Unfamiliar with this book, but love the overall art style. It makes for a great interior page. You know how to pick em KG!

Appreciate that as far as the backstory comment, Ian. I know I can go overboard at times, lol. But I enjoy writing for myself just as much as a fellow collector might enjoy reading. And glad you dig the piece! Thanks!
