DescriptionI’ve wanted a nice published Larsen page for a bit so I’m glad we made it! An ASM page would be great, but pretty pricey these days as we know, and after that Defenders works just fine for me. I remember it being a fun book when it came out – so many characters, multiple plot lines, crazy action…again just a FUN read. Larsen (with Janson ink assist) drew a lot of killer pages, especially in the oversized first issue, from which is the last page.I like the way Doc Strange’s collar is framing him in black in the middle there, and on the bottom got a splashy shot of Pappa Hagg from his first appearance (probably not as “key” as other first appearances, lol), and we also got Hellcat and Nighthawk…but this is about the Surfer. Love the way he’s surfing out of that first panel, the last of the OG Defenders team leaving the scene of the just completed battle. And that sheen rendering on his board looks like an S :) So clearly Larsen top to bottom. Lastly, last page cappers are always great with that preview for what’s coming next. Better with the older pages where you’ve got the lettering on the board, but still. See published image. Thanks, JD, for allowing met to get this! Social/Sharing |

"Sail on!" it says, "sail on,ye stately ships!
And with your floating bridge the ocean span;
Be mine to guard this light from all eclipse,
Be yours to bring man nearer unto man!"

Defenders books are some of the most fun team ups Marvel has to offer, very cool Larsen page! Silver Surfer image is top notch and the Strange is very nice too. Great pickup man!

Janson's inks on Larsen looked great, and they are not two artists I ever would have thought to pair up!

I don't know how but the Silver Surfer looks 3D, as if he's flying off the page, leaving the others behind. Great addition!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly, ND! Loved that about - it's like SS is leaving the scene and literally flying out of the panel/book doing it! Thanks for the add!

Great example from a somewhat misunderstood series. The Larsen - Janson collaboration produced some stunning images

When you look at a fun & cleverly drawn page like this, it's just so clear that Erik Larsen had a blast drawing this book. That top image is fantastic with Surfer's head, hand & board all breaking panel, and that character on the left side of the last panel puts me in mind of his work on Savage Dragon. Great add!!

Totally agree, Paul! It really does feel like Erik had a blast doing this when you flip through the series and just look at the pages, especially those from the first couple issues. You have some sweet pages yourself, especially from issue 2. I'm glad to join the club :) Thanks for the add, man!

I can never get enough of Janson's organic inks. Absolutely sublime! The Silver Surfer image may be the most three dimensional one ever drawn. Astonishing!

You're not kidding about Janson. He's got those wispy organic inks that just add life and energy to whatever he works on. I think of that quote from Rick Leonardi when I showed him a piece I owned where Dan Green inked over him (he hadn't seen before then as Rick pencils on one board and inks were done over blue line on another): “Really cool to see Dan’s inks like that! Fearless gestural inking, no sign he’s scared to let the brush be itself”.
Same vein!
Thanks for the add, Ruben!

Thanks for that Leonardi anecdote, KG, that's exactly what I mean whenever I see Janson's inks!

Klaus does a great job of inking Larsen here. The flow of the page also works very well, from tilted Surfer to Strange to a great half splash. Sincerely something to like in every panel. Nice one KG!

Obviosuly that fist panel is the star of the show. I love that second one too. I'll rock with the third as well, see a new detail each time you look at it.
But again, that Surfer is awesome. The perspective is cool, makes me want to turn my head to get a different angl!

Gorgeous Defenders page from Erik Larsen! That first panel is the real money shot here. What a fabulous full body drawing of the Silver Surfer! I even love that he's posed sideways, allowing Larsen to make him larger. But somehow, I also think the Surfer could ride his cosmic surfboard at any angle he chose to. He is, after all, a cosmic being. In the second panel, I like the way Doctor Strange's black collar frames his face. And at the bottom, I like the way the glowing crystal ball that shows Dr. Strange and Hellcat is eerie and cool. Fantastic pick-up, congrats!
