DescriptionCover dated June 1997. From the second wave of Marvel/DC Amalgam comics. Combining Marvel’s mutants with DC’s Metal Men.I was in my late teens during the first round of Amalgam comics, and I sort of turned up my nose at them when they came out. I thought it was nothing more than a gimmick to drum up sales following the mid-90s industry implosion. Luckily for me, my local comic book store over-ordered them, so they all ended up in the 50 cent bin six months later. I picked them up at that time, and they were much better than I had anticipated. I ended up buying a few of the second wave when they hit the stands a year later. As for the art itself, Barry Kitson has been consistently good for over three decades. I first saw his work on L.E.G.I.O.N. ‘89, and I’ve been a fan ever since. Social/Sharing |

They never came back after this second wave, but we still had fond memories of these mash ups. They did have some A list creators and this one was a lot of fun to see Kitson doing a team again with such wild action.

Amalgam! You could tell the writers and artists really dug the mash-up concept, because they brought us such cool art and stories. To combine them, I'd imagine they had to research them, and find the stories to combine, which gave us all a more finished and polished product. At least, that's my thinking on the series. Big fan. Congrats!

Thanks, and I agree. When the Amalgam books were first announced, I really thought they would be treated by the Big Two as a quick cash grab, but the quality of the stories ended up being quite excellent.
