DescriptionEven though I managed to walk away with a handful of art, this is the ONLY piece that I commissioned for the con this year.As you can tell from my gallery, I'm quite the fan of Martin's work, and after meeting him at the con I'm a fan of the person as well. Just the most kind and sweet gentleman you could hope to meet. He knocked out this killer Death (only time this phrasing works) for me - I had joked with his rep (Dan, at Scott's Collectibles) to please ask Martin to bring the Gold Paint with him, and boy did he BRING it! That's a real stunner. You were right. The gold paint as the background against the black gives it an almost antique feel to the piece. A nice addition to your collection.

This is the first time in my life I've been able to get a sense of how heavy a piece of art is just through a scan. Simmonds keeps slaying it!

So, full disclosure, this one of the instances wherein a scan was not suitable - I've come to realize that gold paint needs a photograph. Most likely because the paint needs to be hit by light at multiple angles to fully 'shine' the way it is meant to. I've added a scan to show how flat it looks when the light is only dead on. They really screwed the pooch with the Publishing of the Laila Starr #5 variant that he did.

Gold and black go together like peanut butter and jelly for me. Would love to see the golds in person, but just an excellent looking piece. Congrats!

He produced this AT the show? Man, that's great. It looks too involved for that, so looks more like an "at home" commission that he brought to the con already done. Congrats!

One of my favorite Death illustrations on CAF. Absolutely stuning.

There is so much texture in just the background alone.

There's a Martin and it's mighty fine
I would not see the art, unless he’s kind
There's a handful, of gold background
Then the rain went into New York comiccon
Everybody wants to sell what's already been sold
Everybody wants to tell what Simmonds has told
What's the use of money
If truth ain't gonna break the mold
Under the umbrella of the fire, Death is cold
Art that glitters is gold, go go go
Art that glitters is gold

The rain adds a sorrowful tone to the piece that enhances the power of the image - the tears of those left behind following a visit from Death? A stunning work of art.

I love the one he did for me through Scott's, but yours is absolutely stellar. He really went above and beyond. Do you have one coming from him through Cadence as well?

No, but in a moment of weakness I wrote to Cadence about pages from DoT #20, and they kindly informed me of Martin's amicable move to Scott's. I set up the piece beforehand but Martin executed it in NY. Thanks for the kind words - your piece is incredible too!

Incredible and so wonderfully unique. This is full of Simmonds signature style and make for a very memorable commission. Can't get over the pose and then you couple that with the gold background. Bravo!
