Description

Dave McKean is a comics writer and artist who needs no introduction to comics fans. His signing session ran well over its allotted 60 minutes span which was owing to how popular he was but also to the fact that he was signing as many comics as anyone put in front of him and that he also seemed to feel obligated to remarque any books towards which he had contributed, which was very time-consuming. I had come unprepared with any of the books I already owned which had art by him (are there any comics fans who do not own at least one book by him?) so I picked up a new[ish] edition of Violent Cases in spite of already having it. One added bonus of my queuing up was that I got into a very interesting conversation with the person queuing in front of me who was one of the organisers of the main Finnish comics convention which had taken place only a few weeks before. Dave McKean had also attended that Helsinki event so he warmly greeted them with instant recognition when it was their turn to have something signed. It was a pleasure to see Dave McKean again as I had followed his career since I saw him at the second-ever London comic convention I went to. He had booked out his own stand where he was displaying his paintings of famous film directors amidst scenes from their movies. Anybody could see even then that he was a talent that was going places. His success did not seem to have affected him as he was humble and modest as he signed and remarqued my copy of Violent Cases. Thank you, sir!
