Description

I became aware of the migration of pretty much all of the high-calibre original comic art being sold from eBay to Heritage from the twenty-teens onwards. When this was happening you could still come across a hidden gem on the Catawiki auction website, not so much nowadays, but, just like on eBay, occasionally. For those who have never used it Catawiki is a strange amalgam of Heritage and eBay. You are given a set time at which a specific lot ends but you cannot snipe because if someone puts a bid in in the last seconds then the clock resets to allow someone to counter that bid until there is only one bidder left standing; you have to pay “juice” on purchases; your history is kept for access from the very first win you have to the present day. If I were to characterize Catawiki’s contents in a few words I would say it is predominantly continental-Europe-centric: there is a lot of Italian, French and Spanish original comic art on the site by people I have never heard of. Although one of the artists who does use it that I do know is Spanish great Daniel Torres, who is a pleasure to deal with.

Another Spanish artist’s work I have purchased from the site is that of Daniel Sampere, back in 2018. The description for this lot mentioned that his resumé included Mortal Combat, Vampirella and Red Sonja and that his then-current DC title was Injustice League (they might have meant Justice League Dark or Injustice2). DS was not an unknown at the time but he was certainly working under the radar of a lot of people. He now seems to have hit the big time with art chores on Tom King’s Wonder Woman and also having a hand in the All In initiative.

The above is a work, so the description went, created and donated specially by Daniel Sampere to raise funds for “jeugdrolstoelbasket denstenaanhuis Lions”.

For a long time I have thought that there is a danger with depictions of the Joker that he can be too clown-like such as the way he appeared in the 1970s then-ongoing eponymous comic written by Denny O’Neil. Perhaps that depiction suited the time because in that comic he was more a loose-cannon lunatic whereas now he is a hair-trigger homicidal maniac. The chilling stare and rictus grin that the Joker has in the above portrait is what first grabbed my attention; there is no danger of mistaking him as just a clown. It reminds me of a similar petrifying look that gazes out at you in the last-but-one shot in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. If this Joker was on the underground/subway manspreading, as he is in the picture, into your personal space you would take issue with him at your own peril.

Apparently Daniel Sampere does most, if not all, of his work digitally now so I did not realise when I acquired this drawing how fortunate I was because it is executed in traditional media.

Thank you to Daniel Sampere for his charitable art donation.

It's actually pretty cool how the playing cards don't have any white to them.  They represent the darker side of a jester and the dark side of his heart.  The running auctions can be a test of stamina and may be why some auction houses aren't as popular with buyers.

That is an interesting interpretation which is totally valid. “Running auction,” – that is the term I was looking for. Yes, there is many a time when I have lost an original-comic-art auction because of someone else’s superior, um, stamina.
