DescriptionCover dated August 2010.Here we have one of the post-Crisis iterations of the Seven Soldiers of Victory, in this case with TNT and Dyna-Mite stepping into the shoes of the retconned out Green Arrow and Speedy. I am thrilled to have this, as I love Williams’ artwork and he does an unbelievable job here portraying the characters in different styles. The Seven Soldiers of Victory also hold a special meaning to me since when my oldest child, who is autistic, was very young, there were only two books of mine that he liked to read. One of those books was inexplicably the first volume of the Seven Soldiers of Victory Archives. So, I’m glad to have one of their few cover appearances from modern times. For those who don’t know, the Seven Soldiers were DC’s second ever super team following the Justice Society of America, and featured the Star-Spangled Kid & Stripesy, the Shining Knight, Vigilante, Green Arrow & Speedy, and the Crimson Avenger (with Wing basically the eighth member). The team has played a role in the current CW series “Stargirl.” I also have to point out that this is an example of artwork that I would not have but for CAF. When CAFer M L recently posted a beautiful cover that Williams did for The Sandman Universe + Locke & Key: Hell & Gone, he mentioned in the comments that he got it from Williams’ website. When I saw that, I kicked myself for never thinking to check whether Williams had a website and I immediately went to it. Less than 30 minutes later, I had purchased this directly from the artist. So, my thanks to M L for setting me down the path to getting this cover, even if he was unaware of it. Social/Sharing |

I'm gonna fight 'em all
A seven soldiers of victory couldn't hold me back
They're gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back
As for ML, I saw his pillows and went to etsy right away.

Don't wanna hear about it
Every Soldier's got a story to tell
Everyone knows about it
From the Dummy to Professor Merlin
Those were very nice pillows.

Thanks! It's amazing to me (in a good way) that we live in a day and age where the Seven Soldiers of Victory have been seen in a prime time television show.

I love how he picked and chose which characters would be illustrated in which styles, thematically. JH Williams is one of the very best pure illustrators we have working in comics. Well bought!

Thanks! What's even more impressive is that Williams continued the mixing of the styles in the eight interior pages that he drew for this issue. His talent is simply off the charts.

That's a great cover! Nice congtrast throughout with all the characters. Strong movie poster feel, as the characters get closer to the viewer as you move down, or further as you move up! I can dig it, Michael. Congrats!

Thanks! I couldn't agree more about the movie poster comparison - I think the movie studios could benefit from having artists like Williams come up with the composition for their posters (particularly given some of the bad poster layouts that we've gotten in recent years).

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - you can never, ever go wrong with a piece from J.H. Williams III. A hearty congrats on your new acquisition! Sounds like it's found a very good home. :-)

Wow! Great cover! I'm upset that they replaced Green Arrow and Speedy but that's a wonderful cover. I had never seen it before. It really stands out. Congrats.

Thanks! I think they were going with a post-Crisis lineup. I agree that it would have been nice to see Green Arrow and Speedy in there.

Williams III has such range to his work. And we get to see some of that displayed here on the different characters depending on their genre backgrounds. Wonderful cover.
